Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info.
Boot.
Install avast! Boot.
Then, which browser are you using?
Does your bank uses secure connection? HTTPS
Do you have a popup killer or any other application that could block you normal browsing?
In addition to "uninstalling" from "Add/Remove
Programs" ( I had to uninstall 3 "components" ) and
running the SymNRT "tool", you should use your machine's
"Search > All files and folders", entering the Search "term"
"Symantec" and later on "Norton" and try to "Delete" all
appropiate items that are listed. Then, if possible, use a
SAFE "registry cleaner" to remove additional items.
Thanks for that…I went to get the symnrt tools, but when I click on the buttons to download them I get the same result as trying to log on to my bank…nothing
Run the three files that you just downloaded
a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
Click Run.
Click Next.
Click I accept the License Agreement, and click Next.
Type the letters and numbers that you see in the white box, and then click Next.
Click Yes or OK at each prompt.
You may need to click more than once. Your computer may be restarted for you more than once.
You may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
Click OK.
The manual links allowed me to save and run the removal tools no problem…alas no difference.
I think the problem with not being able run the windows search function is definitely related…I vaguely remember a message in the original removal process asking whether to delete unused shared files, I was sure I said no but maybe not??
I don’t know much about it but it seems to me there is some kind of driver or something missing or corrupt or something…wierd thing is I get no error messages at all…just nothing happens.
To check the possibility of your last pagagraph, let's see
if your "Run" function still works !? Try clicking "Run", type
"sfc /scannow" and see what happens !? Note there is a
blank space after the 1st "c" and the "/".
Did the "sfc /scannow" actually "run" ( did you see a
"progress bar" move slowly from left to right ? ) ?
As long as it actually "runs" and after a while the
progress bar "disappears", it means it found nothing
wrong .
