Lost access to pause, resume, or stop Providers

Hiya! I’ve been using Avast! Home edition for a couple years and have never had a problem, but yesterday a Trojan was detected and it asked me for an action. I chose move to chest since that was recommended, and then it kept asking me what I wanted to do with the file. I chose delete next but it kept coming back several times. After re-booting and trying a few different things looking for the file, like deleting it manually etc, I lost access to the pause, resume, stop providers selections in the right-click menu from the icon in my task bar.

When I boot I get a ntsd.exe [dr watson] error. When I try to run AshServ manually it hangs with an open command prompt window and won’t initiate.

I’ve tried repairing, uninstalling and re-installing several times and cannot get the program to work.

Any ideas?

I’m running Win2000 sp4, using FireFox latest version, 1Gb ram, swap file is on dedicated drive which has 72.8 Gb of free space, all other drives have lots of space.

The error I get when trying to run ashServ is:

The exception Breakpoint
A breakpoint has been reached.
(0x8000003) occured in the application at 0x77fb2b17

OK to terminate, Cancel to debug

Read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD’s:

  1. Avira
  2. Kaspersky
  3. BitDefender
  4. F-Secure
  5. Dr. Web

After that, I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there.
  4. Boot.
  5. Download, save and install the latest avast! version. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning on next boot.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.
