Lost internet connections

Using the latest Home free edition on two separate computers (my mums and a friends).

Oddly, while doing the automatic update last night, which failed, both computers now have no internet connection.

My friend just informed me via text of her problem. My mums computer is part of my wireless network. Her pc cannot now detect any wireless networks in the area.

Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Thanks in advance.

 Hi :

Doing "automatic updates" of WHAT ? Perhaps the Windows Operating System "Updates" that
were released within the last several days have caused problems !? We will need to know,
SPECIFICALLY, the Name of the Operating System on each computer; IF Windows XP, WHICH
 "Service Pack" ?

Well, very weird indeed. Not sure what was going on, but both pc’s now have the internet again. Not sure if just my works IT helpline standard response of “turn it off, turn it back on again.” was all that was needed.

Both pc’s, while completely different, both use XP Home, Service Pack 2. I believe the problems started while trying to update the virus definitions.

Like I say, we are both up and running again now and I have ran the manual updates successfully.

Maybe there are just Gremlins in the machines!

I suspect the failed update might have been the result of a lost internet connection rather than the cause. Are both computers with the same ISP?

No that’s wastn’t it. Different ISP’s. Plus we both have small networks. Mine and my fiends pc worked ok, but my mums and her sons (the two which have Avast installed) failed.

I sussed what was wrong with my friends. She didn’t tell me what time things went wrong. When she did, I realised it was the Cyberpatrol parental control software I had installed on her sons computer. It can cut off internet access at any times you specify.

The mystery still remains of what happened on my mum’s pc. It seems fine now and has been updated since. Computers eh! A mind of their own sometimes.
