Lost Program after Updating

When updating today, I got a broken chain message. I then tried updating the actual program. It seemed successful and next asked me to restart comp. After restarting I got a message saying program would not start, “possibly missing a .dll file, run Detect and Repair in Help Menu”. The program is not showing up in my start programs; the Setup file in TEMP does not have an exe. file anymore. What happened??

I am going to try to download from the website. This was crazy! ???

LL,

In order for me to help you, I need some information:
What OS are you using?
When you said you were updating, what were you updating…Program or Database?
Were you updating manually or automatically?
What exactly was the message you received?

Did you run the Detect and Repair routine? If so, what result did you obtain?

At this point, I cannot say for sure what transpired, but I would suspect a file corruption occurred.

You mentioned that you were going to try a download.
Make sure that you completly uninstall the version of Avast that you have on the computer before trying to install a new copy.

Let me know if you make progress.
