What happens if you enable virtual memory?
Albert,
Before you go venturing off changing settings,
Can I ask what the pop up said?
Avast does use additional resources but it should not cause a problem. I use it on my WinXP without any troubles at all in the months I have used it.
Let’s try to localize the source of the error first.

Wow, fast replies.
Pop up “Vitual memory minimum set too low”
I have not change any settings on Avast yet if ur refering to that, but if ur refering to winxp than i have always set VM off.
And with VM set to 32-32(min/max)mb i got no pop up.
When i look at tast manager “performance”
Commit Charge(K)
Total = 31++++
Limit = 98++++
Peak = 94++++
Above is when Avast Home is installed and with or w/o VM
W/Out Avast and with or w/o VM set to 32-32
Total = 31++++
Limit = 98++++
Peak = 15++++
And thanks for the quick replied guys
Did I understand you correctly? You have only 32Mb of Virtual Memory (pagefile.sys) in XP?
If yes, how much free space into your HDD do you have?
Can’t you set anything like 256Mb for Virtual Memory? :
Looks kike he has [1 gig of ram] in his 1st post, that should cover avast and many other progams at once, although if 32 megs is set for virtual memory, seems a bit low?
Why is it you have chosen to disable virtual memory? ???
I think enabling it will solve the whole issue.
Any specific reason you choose not to use the pagefile.sys? Generaly, that should always be left on or you’re going to run into problems Albert.
Windows should choose the size for you.

Albert,
The pop up is warning you that you are loosing the ability of Windows to manage the virtual memory allocation.
You SHOULD NOT have VM shut off! When you do this, the system will depend on the physical memory available which can be used up quickly. VM allows the “swapping” of files back and forth from the physical available and the virtual memory allocated to the system functions.
I recommend setting the min to 384 and the max to 768mb.
This should allow you plenty of room to manuver.
or, you can select Windows to manage the virtual memory automatically (which sometimes is not all that great).
Anyway, good luck.

384-768mb
Yeah, either windows or an application may still wish to allocate some (infrequently) used memory from RAM to virtual memory for efficiency, its not just an overflow for when more memory is needed. Obviously less is needed with more RAM, but its still needed.
steve,
Your interpretation is essentially correct. VM and physical RAM work hand in hand to maintain efficiency and speed.
I have found FASTDEFRAG a nice little program for when my system gets “tight” on memory allowing me to “reallocate” memory in a few seconds before things go critical.

After a lot of tentatives, in XP, the best I could found is FreeRAMXP.
Works fine managing the VM and the RAM. A lot of configurable features like your beloved avast! It’s a freeware of course ;D
Hello Gents/Ladies
Well with 1G of physical rams, I don’t thnk my system need VM, besides no program(s) in my system ever ask for VM, except for Photoshop otherwise it wouldn’t installed if i remembered correctly.
And I didn’t come here to find out if my system is running faster or better with VM or w/o it.
Well anyway back to the subject, anyone know why everytime i restart my pc, Avast AntiVirus uses up the total physical ram in my system. U can see this in Task Manager “Performance” tab in “Commit Charge”
Thanks for the replies
That’s like Windows work… This is our technical answer…
I do recommend do not turn off the VM as techie said 8)
