I used Avast Free anti-virus on Win 10 - see the attached file version.png.
I received notification about low space on system disk - see the attached file storage.png.
I check the reason and found that file avast occupied all free space on the system disk - see the attached file properties.png.
A few years ago I found the same problem on Win XP on other HW - so the solution is very simple: delete the file at the next reboot.

I suppose you aren’t able to reproduce the problem (without waiting a few years again), are you? I.e. if you delete that file, would it appear again?

No, the situation is not repeatable on my machine.
I think that problematic scenario for reproducing the problem is simple - reboot the machine during downloading new Avast version.
About the previous cases I can not say anything, but may be you can find any related information in your tickets data base - the original ticket ID #YZZ-378-61721
