I just updated Windows XP. A new downloaded file from Microsoft, lwinupdate.exe alerts as a virus in Avast!
Believe this is a false positive result.
Disregard my posting re lwinupdate.exe. After rechecking seems to be a trojan.
A Google search on the file name seems to support your second post, http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=lwinupdate.exe.
It is entirely possible to pick up infections whilst connected to windows update. Years ago when trying to update to XP SP1 I got hit within minuted of connecting and it isn’t comming from windows update.
This begs the question what is your firewall as that should be stealthing your system so as not to be susceptible to drive by attacks ?
You could also check the offending/suspect file at: VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings here. You can’t do this with the file securely in the chest, you need to extract it to a temporary (not original) location first, see below.
I am using Comodo Firewall Pro, and all ports check as stealth on Shields UP. I think, when I was checking the properties of the lwinupdate.exe file, I accidentally right clicked the properties of the file above it. I know the file was loaded at the time I was updating applications, including MS apps that needed security updates.
Still worth confirming the detection at virustotal.
Here’s Sunbelt’s info on this infection.
