I am running Avast! Home v. 4.7.827 and Thunderbird. Emails that I have received before with a subject of “:-)” had popped up a warning which allowed me to still receive the message. But today, after a recent update, I did not get the option to allow the email but instead I received an email with subject avast! heuristics - WARNING. My heuristics are set to normal as well as my internet mail settings.
Is this something that was adjusted in the recent update to the avast system? And if so how do I stop this from happening? Help would be greatly appreciated with this problem.
There were two tabs of settings for Heuristic mail detection.
If you set the level to Custom you can choose all you want/nedd.
For Thunderbird, you must configure Internet Mail provider.
As far I know, the last update does not change anything in email Heuristics
You need to configure the settings of the two tabs of Heuristics to fit your needs.
In the help file, the meaning of each item is explained. If you don’t want to change anything, let the default values and see if you’re satisfied.
If you’re using Windows XP, the scanning by avast of Thunderbird mail is transparent, i.e., you don’t need to do anything or set anything…
Everything is ready and up to go.
I believe you Tech, but there’s something that worries me. When I go to the “On-Access” menu and look at Internet Mail, it shows that zero emails were scanned.
(See attachment)
Yet, I’ve had Thunderbird installed for days now with many emails coming and going. Is this supposed to happen? I have Windows XP, no other antivirus and an earthlink, yahoo and hotmail account all configured to dump into a global inbox
Ah, since time immemorial belief has wanted proof to make it stronger.
Perhaps you can help us understand your environment.
It may perhaps be that you live in a Yahoo domain that provides free POP3 access to allow you to download your Yahoo mail to Thunderbird - or it may be that you pay for such access … or do you use a program (or Thunderbird extension) that assists you to download Yahoo.
I am not aware of any Hotmail domain that will allow you (paid or free) to download Hotmail to Thunderbird … so perhaps you have the assistance of another program (or Thunderbird extension)?
I do not use Earthlink and so cannot comment on that … but … a little more assistance with two out of three may help us to help you.
Just a tip … if you go to Internet Mail provider > Customize > Redirect Tab > Uncheck the ‘Ignore local communication’ box … does it make any difference to the scanned messages details?
If the mail indeed passes through Thunderbird, it should be scanned.
I use Thunderbird (not with Yahoo accounts) and the counter rises, the clean notes are added and so on.
But, I think Alan is asking you the proper questions, can you answer them?
Did try unchecking ‘Ignore local communication’ with no success. As for Yahoo and Hotmail I am using an extension for POP retrieval since I don’t have a premium account for either one - It’s called WebMail (attachment 1)
Because my OS seems to want to block all ports below 1024 I have had to use custom ports instead of the default (attachment 2)
To be continued on next post since only two attachments allowed…
…Thing is I’ve tried using both sets of ports in Avast; in other words the default (110, 25, 143) and the custom ones used for WebMail configuration (1100, 1025, 1043)
(pic one shows the defaults back in place)
Also, in case it matters, I’ve set Thunderbird options to allow anti-virus scanning as well (pic 2)
Thanks for the help btw. It’s kind of frustrating since many people seem to be using the two together just fine yet my situation feels a little out of the ordinary. Yet, that shouldn’t account for email coming in from EarthLink, which is a standard POP protocol. Not to mention all my email goes out using EarthLink STMP (25)
I use Thunderbird along with the WebMail extensions for Yahoo and Hotmail. I also use non-standard ports that I have set up in Webmail as you have. My mails are scanned.
To make it work:
You need to tell avast to scan these ports as well as the default ports. In the redirect ports page that you’ve pictured in the thread set the boxes as:
POP 110,1110
SMTP 25,1025
You must also have the ‘Ignore local communication’ box unchecked.
I have worked with the Webmail developer recently to ensure that the avast X-Antivirus headers can be inserted into the messages received through the Webmail extensions and since you have the up to date releases you should be able to see them in the scanned messages (as well as the count of scanned messages increasing).
Remember that you will not see any evidence of scanning in the sent mail folder on Thunderbird because the “scanned” information is added after the mail is sent.
Oh, the allow antivirus scanning option in Thunderbird is just about useless (but also harmless if you turn it on).
Yes! that is the magic ingredient - it’s not either/or, but BOTH (I believe there needs to be a space after the comma as well). All emails now being scanned and avast! once again proves itself the best antivirus product on the market.
Thanks very much for the help
And for those wishing to test their antivirus program there’s a great website worth checking out. It will send you a bunch of fake infected emails to see how your antivirus program responds. Avast! caught all of em 8)
