Hi Folks! Obviously I’m new here and glad to be aboard. I’m running Windows XP Home with Internet Explorer 6. I’ve just downloaded and configured the latest free version of Avast. I think I’ve got everything set up right except for the Mail Notification embeding in my received e-mails. I can’t seem to get these notifications to show up in my received e-mails. I use Outlook 2002 for my primary PoP3 e-mail client, as well as MyWay.com for my Web-based e-mail client. Neither e-mail client shows the notice that Avast has indeed screened and approved the e-mails as clean. However, I do see the e-mail icon appear briefly in the task bar and a pop-up message near the task bar seems to be indicating that screening is taking place. Is there something I’m missing, as far as having the embeded message confirmation also show up in the actual incoming e-mail.
I do have Zone Alarm -AND- I have indeed condigured it to allow the Avast e-mail executable to run. Any suggestions on what I’m missing?
About the clean notes into the message body, can you try ‘Settings’ on my signature?
UseAlternateRtfSyncing value under [MailScanner] section:
Another mechanism for inserting notes into the body of emails in Microsoft Outlook. RtfSyncing is concerned with Rich Text Format. In emails, the user typically save both Rich text (HTML) and plain form of message. When you modify one type of message, RTFSync is the right function to synchronize text of message to the second form. Disable = 0.
Don’t forget that you will not see the inserted note in the ‘Sent Items’ folder of your mail program,
because avast adds the note after the mail leaves the mail program.
Ok, it was a bit difficult trying to understand what you were saying (or at least the way it was being phrased). However, I seem to have managed to force the “clean” comment message to display in Outlook by switching the default type within Outlook from “HTML” to “RTF”. However, oddly enough, it takes a few seconds after the e-mail is received and opened for the “clean comment” to finally dispay within that same e-mail!
In other words, it does not appear when you first open the e-mail. The “clean comment” portion does seem to be trailing 5-10 seconds from the reception of the e-mail. After that brief period if you re-open the e-mail it is suddenly there. I guess this is as good as it’s probably going to get with Avast so I’ll accept this as just an odd quirk . . . although it does seem to work. If anyone knows why this long lag, perhaps you could post back with a workaround. I do appreciate the tip on switching to RTF . . . thanks.
Now as for the second part of my original post . . . does anyone know of why the “clean comment” is NOT showing up in my Web-based “MyWay.com” e-mail client? I have properly configured it to display, but it is not.
Update: I am getting an attachment now in the “MyWay.com” web-based e-mail account called “winmail.dat”. It is 4kb but does not open with any program I have. I get this attachment now with every e-mail received via my “MyWay.com” e-mail client. This clearly is being generated by Avast some how because it never did this before. I need advice on this? Thanks in advance!
Not sure about your problem because I’ve never seen this before. I CAN tell you that Avast is a great AV Program and hasn’t caused me any trouble over the years. You posted on the 16th my friend… Gotta give people time to read and think about your problem. If you chose AVG it’s resident provider upon finding a virus makes you do a manual scan to find it and take care of it… and Antivir Updates are very slow.
Well, the note is added by Outlook/The Bat plugins or the Internet Mail provider… Web Mail… humm… maybe it’s not the way to get it.
Maybe you can stay just with the X-Antivirus line in the emails headers.
I can’t understand the ‘with support’ remark, you received a reply in just over an hour, considerably better than most AVs and more so when it is for a free product.
Now as for the second part of my original post . . . does anyone know of why the "clean comment" is NOT showing up in my Web-based "MyWay.com" e-mail client? I have properly configured it to display, but it is not.
Because it is web based and the email scanners are designed for email protocols, pop3, smtp, imap and nntp, ports 25, 110, 139 and 143, not internet http protocol, port 80.
