Mail protection with Firefox

I am using Xp home and the newest version of Firefox (0.8?).

I can’t figure out how to set the mail protection up? It just doesn’t work!

Disclaimer ;): I am very sorry if you’ve answered lots of the newb questions, but I have read the faq and searched the threads for the answer to my solution without luck.

Well its impossible to set up with Firefox which is only a browser, but you can use it with Mozilla Suite or Thunderbird.

Mail Protection Wizard should do the trick (Start\avast! Antivirus).
Just select protect all mail accounts and follow the wizard procedure.

hehe… i meant thunderbird of course

the mail protection wizard doesn’t work. there is no “no virus was found, bla bla” message in the outbound mails even though i have checked the box in Avast!.

Thunderbird must be configurated manually. Change the setting of the email accounts into Thunderbird: Menu Tools > Account settings this way:

Pop3 (Inbound):

Server name: 127.0.0.1
User name: YourUserName#YourPopServerName
Port: 110

Smtp (Outbound):
Server name: 127.0.0.1
User name: YourUserName#YourSmtpServerName
Port: 25

Note, probably you should run Mail Protection Wizard to have ashMaiSv.exe automatically running at Windows startup.

Do you use any spam killer?

I don’t use any spam killer…

I have tried to set it up as you described. But when i type in the password in Thunderbird and it connects it says: “Sending of user name did not succeed. Mail server 127.0.0.1 responded: Unknown command: AUTH PLAIN”

In the Outgoing Mail Server setting under username it needs only your username. The YourUserName#YourSmtpServerName isnt necessary there for it to work.

If your server requires secure authentication be sure to check that box in the inbound mail settings section

Close Thunderbird after making the changes, then reopen to test it

thanks for your help! All it took was a simple reboota

Hooray… glad its working  and welcome to the forum
