Mail scanner module wont start!

Well it starts, but not fully - the name of the module in the main window is grayed and a message to the right says that it is waiting for some subsystem to start. And the mail scanning isn’t working, of course (no information popus in right bottom corner, no “Mail clean” message in e-mails…]. But when I terminate this half-started module and then start it again, everything is fine and working! How is that possible? It’s the latest version…

Sounds like a bug, really.

Please try the following patch:

  1. Stop the avast antivirus service (Control Panel → Administrative Tools → Services)
  2. Download the file http://www2.asw.cz/~vlk/ahresmai.zip and extract its contents to the avast directory (overwrite existing files)
  3. Restart the avast antivirus service

That should help. Please let me know if it does.

Thanks
Vlk

Vlk,
I attempted to stop the avast! antivirus services and got the following error message:
“Could not stop the Avast antivirus service on local computer.”
Error 1053 the service did not respond in a timely manner
But the a icon had a red mark, hovering showed no providers running…??

cojo

Well it probably stoped then - just try to overwrite the files and see if it succeeds.

Yep, that helped…thank you! 8)

Vlk,

I have a similar problem and tried the fix you recommended. My Outlook/Exchange provider STILL is “waiting for a subsystem to start.” Any ideas as to what subsystem it might be waiting for, and how to get it started? ???

Thanks,
mcs

mcs,
what do you use as email client?

MS Outlook.

If it’s Outlook XP or 2003, please go to Outlook’s About box, click Disabled Items and make sure avast is not on the list.

I’m running Outlook 2000 (v9.0.0.2711)

Make sure the Outlook plugin is installed.

Outlook → Tools menu → Options → Other → Advanced Options → Add-In Manager

Thanks
Vlk

The avast! plug-in is present and checked.

Do you see the avast plugin splash screen when starting Outlook then?

Yes, that does appear briefly.

…and the provider is still waiting for a subsystem to start - I mean when Outlook is running???

Now the provider has started. Does the provider not start until after Outlook has been started, or does it start automatically upon logon? It is the latter, isn’t it?

See it this way. The provider only starts when it is needed. Why running if you have Outlook closed and there is nothing to protect/scan?

It’s the former. The Outlook/Exchange provider is only active when Outlook is running.

Outlook is the “subsystem” it is waiting for

I thought I remembered that all six providers started up automatically upon logon. My mistake, and I apologize for needlessly taking up your time.

Cheers,
mcs

Thank-you Vlk! …for this little gem because it fixed my “Provider won’t start” problem.

I’m running:
OS: WIN98 SE
Mail client: OUTLOOK 2000 (v9.0.0.6627)
SpamFilter: SpamBully (v2.0.0.89)
avast! version: 4.5.523 official release

I never knew the “Add-In Manager” menu even existed in Outlook:

It all makes sense now. I remember seeing a little red flag in the blue avast! taskbar ball yesterday. Sometime during a reboot while Outlook was trying to startup I vaguely recall seeing a brief warning message saying something about “avast! plug-in” being unplugged, disconnected, or something, and another message about a possible MAPI32 file being overwritten and possibly having a compatibility error.

I tried several things including Repairing Outlook 2000, re-installing .523, and even installing avast! beta .531 to no avail! I’m also running SpamBully 2.0.0.89 and was getting ready to disable it when I found your post in the forum.

For me your instructions for going into OUTLOOK 2000’s “Add-In Manager” and placing a checkmark by “avast! 4” got everything going again.

Later I’ll have to light-up my XP w/SvcPk2 machine and see how that goes.

Many thanks!
