My internet provider, Wildblue, just switched it’s e-mail over to Gmail and now my incoming mail scanner quit working. I set the Gmail program to enable Pop3, and set my mail program, Thunderbird, to the recommended settings, and I can receive and send mail with no problems. Before the change, the Thunderbird settings were, I believe, port 110, and never use security. Now it’s port 995 and SSL security. Could this be the problem?
I also have a regular Gmail account coming through my Thunderbird program, and the mail scanner doesn’t work on it either.
I am using a Windows XP Home machine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The whole idea of SSL secure encrypted email is to keep put prying eyes out, so AVs can’t scan SSL encrypted traffic/content.
So avast doesn’t attempt to monitor SSL email that uses the SSL ports, e.g. 995 or whatever ports are used, avast only monitors the ‘standard’ email ports, 25, 110, 119 and 143.
If you want avast to scan this SSL traffic you will require a third party interface like STunnel and set-up things to use it. If you wish to do this try a forum search for STunnel (and gmail OR thunderbird, etc.) and it should reveal a number of topics.
