Mail scanner tray-icon always visible

Hi all. I have Windows XP Pro SP2 and Avast! 4.8 home edition build 4.8.1169.

I started using IMAP email fetching recently. Since then, all the time my email client (Thunderbird) is open, the Avast mail scanner icon is shown at the system tray. Not when I fetch the mail but always.

I have two IMAP accounts, one with Gmail and one with my ISP. Curiously, with Gmail the icon shows only when fetching the mail but with my ISP’s mail the icon shows itself when I fetch my mail and then stays in the system tray. Only shutting down Thunderbird make it disappear.

Am I concerned about nothing, is this a software bug or what?

No, unlike the ancient SMTP and POP protocols which were written for a dial up world and set to terminate at the end of the mail receive/send session the IMAP protocol is intended for the “always connected” world and stays connected as long as Thunderbird is open. Hence the avast icon stays too.

I take it I don’t get an email scanner icon in the tray because I use Microsoft Outlook?

But what if I received some web based email, what would or should I see in the tray then?

Yes, the icon is from Internet Mail provider only.

Webmail is not scanned neither by Internet Mail provider nor Outlook plugin. Some of them that does not use security traffic (https) will be scanned by WebShield.

Nightshade,

please read your recent posts - this was already explained to you only a few days ago.

I still do not think you understand what I am trying to find out.
