I just noticed the mail scanner in the system tray.
I’ve only ever seen it when my mail client is running and the avast console didn’t show any mail as scanned either - any ideas why?
Thanks

The icon is shown everytime that avast listen the ports and try to scan mail.
If there is not a single message, the provider won’t show any info (there is not ‘last scanned message’).
Does this occur even when you in fact receive mail?
Do you use a spam killer application?
No spam killer (I don’t get spam luckily!).
Yes, it shows when OE is running and looking for, or receiving mail - this is just the first time i’ve seen it when OE wasn’t/hasn’t been running.
Not wishing to scare you, but it may just be possible (but unlikely in this case) that there is a trojan spambot on your system that doesn’t need OE to send email. Although that should still increase the Scanned Count: and the Last Scanned: so that may not be the case.
Do you recognise the domain name in the image you posted, is it your ISP ?
Do you have OE check periodically for email ?
If so this activity may well activate the icon but if there is no email to download/scan there would be no change in the Last Scanned, Count, etc.
If you don’t periodically check for email with OE, then to be certain there is nothing else sending email without your knowledge download and run Ewido Security Suite If using winXP. or a-Squared free if using win98/ME. Preferably in safe mode.
In these cases, we must discover what was trying to use the mail ports: 25, 110, 119, 143… the default used for mail.
If you use a firewall, you’ll have its logs.
Or you can try TCPView from www.sysinternals.com that will show what application is connected with which port.
I see from your systray clip that you are running utorrent.
It seems to me pretty clear that this is the cause of the avast mail icon.
