Mail Scanning Problem for OE

Hello,

This is a problem posted on my web by a user.

Summary:

OS : XP Home
Mailer: Outlook Express and MS Outlook
Port# : POP3 110, SMTP 25

avast! doesn’t scan email of OE. (MS-Outlook is OK.)
e-mails of OE don’t have avast mail headers.
Internet mail provider is in resident.

After ashMaiSv.exe was run manually, avast! scanned e-mails of OE.
“repair” of the setting program didn’t work for fixing this problem.

ashMaiSv.exe seemes not to be run on reboot, but this user says MS-Outlook is OK.
It is little strange for me. I have no idea, so far. :-\

I made sure avast! scanned e-mails of OE without any special settings on my computer, so that avast! should work fine with OE on JP Windows.

Could you give this user and me any suggestions ?

Waht is telling him/making him think Avast is not scanning OE?
Let him setup the mail in OE as if Avast isn’t there.
The transparant mail option in Avast should automaticly take care of the mail scanning.

Iso-G, which is the user’s OS?
If e-mails of OE don’t have avast mail headers they are probably not being scanned.

If after ashMaiSv.exe was run manually, avast! scanned e-mails of OE and ashMaiSv.exe seemes not to be run on reboot, this is the problem. If the user has XP, can you check how ashMaiSv.exe service is running? Automatic or Manual?
Does he have a Regystre entry for running ashMailSv.exe for all users?

Hello,

Eddy,
Thank you very much.
I left a comment to the user to make sure if mail account was correct.

Technical,
The user’s OS is XP Home. I’m not sure if SP2 is applied.

Yes. I think it is problem, too.
“ashMaiSv.exe” is started automatically on my computer. Searching with regedit, it is found in “HKEY_…”
I’ll also leave a message for the user to search the entry with regedit, soon. Thank you very much.

If it isn’t there, should I tell the user to add the entry there manually ? or does ALWIL team have any alternative ?

It should be manual (not automatic) ::slight_smile:

I tested two ways:

  1. Repairing the installation through Control Panel: fail
  2. Addind the Registry Key manually and, after, repairing the installation: works 8)

Hello,

By the newest post of this user today, I knew he fixed his problem.
From today’s his post, he is using a special software, “WIN Kosokuka PC” ( the meaning like speed-up of Windows computer ), to increase processing speed of a computer.
By his comment, this special software always stop starting ashMaiSv.exe, and also it never allow the auto-start of ashMaiSv.exe even if the settings of the software are changed.

Everybody, thank you very much for your help.

Iso-G

As we can see, speed, in this case, is not the best friend of security and well function… :stuck_out_tongue:
