Mail Timeout

Okay as per requested;Eddy(thxs B.T.W. 4 ur help)

First some point outs for by-passers.

This deals with the Self-Hosted
------------------------->

Okay , I had problems with Avast 4.1 shutting off access to port 25 , suggested fix ; Update to new Beta-4.5 ; Done ! Problem with blocked port 25 gone ! For more Technical Info. Refer to post : http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=8089;start=0 <> Okay so now I get new prompt but only when my SMTP is hit ( someone sends mail ). I ran my test on my SMTP , Avast now lets it pass thru to my server with no problem . Okay so now if the connection to my SMTP stops ( the user is done , mail server finished request , exit )

Avast gives me an option : Yes<>No ?

Internet Connection Timeout Elapsed. Continue Waiting ?
[Server:'..***.25].

                 Yes<>No ?

Should I click yes or no ?

I dont want to click yes and shut off the protection or Avast shut off port 25 in an effort to protect me.Will this prompt happen everytime someone sends mail through my forum ?

My SMTP Mail Server is only utilized as a linker ( basically ) to access the " SendMail.dll " on windows that the phpBB forums utilize as an in house mail system which allows all the PM,Posting , etc…

B.T.W. I was wonderin’ what that new little blue ball was ,
I read in Eddys posting the answer , but that guy said it was the IP# of the mail server , my mail server is at 127.0.0.1 , the baloon showed the IP# of the SMTP test site that I use to test my SMTP server , if this is right then thats okay.

Look, if you click yes you will stay waiting for the message to finish.
If you click no, you won’t lose the proctection, just the message won’t be delivered.
Did I make myself clear? It’s not a matter of protection but receiving or not the email.

It’s ok. The IP showed is not yours but the one you’re receiving the mail.

So if I click “NO” then the message will not be delivered ?
So I must click " YES " in order for the message to stay in Queue until recieved by the end user ?

I guess that that means I got to sit here at my computer everytime one of my users sends a message , pm , etc…

No you did not. Just make the timeout higher both in your email accounts and avast :wink:
How do you connect to Internet? How big was that messages?

To Technical, this is the same thing I had with Opera Mail. Click yes and you will get the same message over and over again. Changing timeouts is not solving it.

Sorry… I’ll let this problem to you… It’s not on my hands (or brain ;D) capabilities.
Thanks Eddy.

DAG-BURN-IT !.. lmao… just got home from work , bet i had 100 of those little prompts all over my screen… lol…

Just as a note ***

I cannot change the time-out for my mail server . That is adjusted by " APACHE " under my time-outs in general . I cannot change it , i will stick to their suggested settings on that cause i already had 3 hack attempts so my current settings shut the abuser off (worked rather nicely , I might add :slight_smile: . So i think i leave APACHE settings alone.

*My Connection: D.S.L.:Business Act.

Add a line “Log=20” (without the ") to avast4.ini under [MailScanner]
That will add extended error logging in aswMaiSv.log.
Post the last error herein the log here.

uummpphh… look at this ;

DefaultPopServer=
DefaultSmtpServer=
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=0

maybe since Avast does’nt know the servers is causing some confusion ?

I did what you said eddy , but it may take awhile before i get an error. My site is mainly traveled across late at night for some reason.

heres the current mail Log:

So don’t take my word for it that this is ok.
Let’s wait till you get the error and than post that part of the log here.

Okay . I’m going to bed now , I’ll be back on tonight.
Perhaps it will get an error by then.

A new update of Avast just hit the road, including a update of the ashMailsv, perhaps that one solves your prob.

VB_For_Dummies, if I understand your correctly, you have a SMTP server on the same computer as Avast and you experience problems when some programs (especialy phpForum via Apache) are trying to send mails from this PC.

You cannot run more than one program listening on the same TCP port. In this situation both your SMTP server and Avast Mail Scanner are fighting for control of port 25. The one which starts first gets it and other one could not function properly.

You have to change the configuration of one of them. The simpliest thing would be to move avast Mail Scan to an other port (say 2525). Mail clients will then connect directly to your SMTP server listening on 127.0.0.1:25. SMTP Server will accept the mail from client and will try to deliver it to its destination (other PC in the internet). At that time automatic SMTP scanner (new in version 4.5) will intercept the connection and scan the mail for viruses. (by forwarding it to the port 2525 where avast! mail scanner is listening).

You may change the port where avast! SMTP Scanner is listening by editing the file Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini, the section

[MailScanner]
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:2525

Hope it helps, I am not really sure If got to the nature of your problem.
Cheers Lukas.

BTW: Beware when opening a SMTP server on your PC accessible from the internet. When not configured properly it may soon be found by some SPAM ‘lovers’ and ab-used to spread SPAM. But at least (with avast! Internet Mail scan) they might get their spams checked for viruses . :stuck_out_tongue:

Wowsers…This is pretty good stuff Lukor!
Firstly , yeah , it’s pretty risky that my mail server carries the chance of spammers but my site will be closed knitted so the likely-hood of mis-use will be narrower.
{Just as a Warning:My site is an Adult-Themed-Site and when completed will be based on a paid membership basis only}:But somehow people have seem to be accessing my site already and it not even completed yet.

So are you saying that if I put Avast on port 2525 , then it will still scan port 25?

As it is right now i’ll tell you how i have a few things set up

My router has port:25 forwarded to this machine .
My mail server is : just a freebie with only 2 options available ; 1) DNS ? { set on auto-find } 2) listen to port ? {set to port:25[Default]
I seem to get the feeling that you understand what I’m using the mail server for.

I have also been consulting with another user ( the only real help available on the phpBB forums ) on phpBB Forums ; he said that it may be possible but not actually necessary to go ahead and forward port:110 ; he said that it may be possible that avast was scanning the mail but was’nt /able to/sending it back to the SMTP mail server or that the SMTP mail server could’nt deliver the mail because of port:110 being closed off even though port:110 had nothing to do with it and in turn , somehow , kicking back to avast.
I have’nt a clue but it kinda made alot of sense to me so i fowarded the port:110
Just for the heck of it; this morning .
So , I’ll go ahead and change avast.ini to “127.0.0.1:2525
And might as well Update to the new release as well while I’m at it.
Eddy
I still have’nt recieved any errors Eddy.I only had 1 Log Error in my Apache Log file today and it was in reference to a browser conflict , my site is pretty much up to par ;

I think that all should be well now and if I run into anymore problems ; I know where to find you guys :slight_smile: . Thank you all for all your help.

Refering to one of your first posts here:

You know where to go to now when you have problems ;D

I hope it works now, but just want to clarify. The port that is automaticly scanned (or more precisely connections to this port are scanned) is controled in the ini file by:
(with default values)

[MailScanner]
SmtpRedirectPort=25

For the purpose of actualy scanning it, and for “old” setups where automatic redirect is not used, Internet Mail Provider listens on some (posibly different) port on localhost. This one is controled by:

[MailScanner]
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:25

These two number are by no means related. You might view at as if Internet Mail Provider is a SMTP server running on you computer (‘SmtpListen’) which provides antiviral protection. SMTP servers tend to run on port 25, so that is why ‘SmtpListen’ default value is 127.0.0.1:25. Together with this it also automaticly catches every outgoing connection to other machines if they are directed to the SMTP servers. These are recognized by ‘SmtpRedirectPort’ port number. (default is also 25). You can add other values here, eg. if your ISP and/or friend runs a SMTP server on some other port than 25 (maybe for security reasons).

When you are using only the auto scan feature, the number in “SmtpListen” doesn’t matters. The only requirement is (and that is true for every two servers running on you PC) that their port numbers must be different. So I’ve chosen 2525, but it can be anything you like, for example K9 antispam uses 9999, so ours can be lets say 8888 :).

Have a nice day,
Lukas.

PS.: Just a final note. Please consider carefuly whether you will be running a public SMTP server on you PC. If you need just the sendmail functionality for you PHP pages (running on the same machine), there is no need for the SMTP server to be accessible from outside (no forwarding on router) - mail is send from Apache + PHP only. On the other hand, when you need to accept mails sended to you via your SMTP server, there is no need for the server to be able to deliver mail to other domains than yours (thats called open relay). I can hardly imagine any reason for opening an ‘open relay’ server on your very PC…whether your WWW pages would be or would be not protected by access password doesn’t really have any significance.
