Mailwasher Pro problem with Avast 5

I’ve just noticed a strange occurrence and though I suspect the problem could be with Avant 5.0.396 I have no proof of this.

I use Mailwasher Pro to vet my emails before opening Outlook Express, and have Mailwasher Pro’s options set to notify me when new emails arrive at boot up.
On three separate occasions over the last few days when opening Mailwasher Pro and clicking on “Process Mail” Avast has also updated the latest virus definitions at the same time. When this happens I am unable to access the email via Outlook Express (OE just pauses before the message “unable to access server”). I can still see the email on the server via Mailwasher Pro but I’m unable to download the message into Outlook Express. If I delete the message though Mailwasher Pro all further message download correctly and from then on everything works as normal.

This problem has only happened since installing Avast 5, prior to this everything worked great with my emails. I suppose I could change the Mailwasher Pro options to not check for emails on boot up and then wait for Avast to load the latest virus definitions as a workaround but would prefer the way it is now. Has anyone else experienced this problem or is it just me?

I don’t have that problem, mailwasher just calls OE and you download, now if that happens to coincide with an update.

I also don’t start mailwasher on boot, I don’t see the point in that I only want it to launch and connect when I want it to do that.

I don’t see why there would be a difference in the actions going from 4.8 to 5.0, when I did so I didn’t see any difference and I really should have as the changes I made in 4.8 with MW and avast updates weren’t present initially after updating to 5.0:

Firstly I never say any good reason for avast to scan MW content as it doesn’t download the email in full, nor does it download attachments and it is viewed in text mode, so any risk is extremely low. Secondly, I’m on dial-up so I also delayed the avast update check, so at times I could quickly go on-line without initiating an avast update check. None of those were present on update to 5.0.

All I have done is exclude MW from the Mail Shield scans, but that shouldn’t impact the problems you are reporting and I really don’t know why it is happening. Perhaps if the first email is large or has a large attachment it may appear to stall and OE reports that as “unable to access server” though I can’t recall ever having that error, time out errors yes.

So I’m not really sure what may be the cause, but there is little information to dig any deeper, connection type (dial-up, etc), Your OE account settings, if this is SSL email, etc.
