MailWasher

Please Help! after updating home edition to 4.6.603 my MailWasher gets “Connection Timeout” and “The operation timed out” error. It is almost impossible to use MailWasher. Please what to do? TIA

Are you using SSL or secure mail authentication? Check your Mailwasher settings. Under Avast internet mail/customize/redirect do you show port 110?

"Are you using SSL or secure mail authentication? NONE OF THEM Check your Mailwasher settings. Under Avast internet mail/customize/redirect do you show port 110? YES

Try making the ‘Timeout for Internet communications’ longer, (Under Avast internet mail > customize > Advanced).

I don’t bother to have avast check the small parts of the email downloaded to identify spam, etc. All email not deleted, etc. by mailwasher is scanned when it is downloaded form the mail servers.

Edit your avast4.ini file to exclude mailwasher, see below, find the [MailScanner] section and add the line IgnoreProcess=MailWasher.exe if there is no IgnoreProcess entry, if there is just add mail washer to it, second example.

This will obviously lower your protection very slightly (there are no attachments downloaded in mailwasher, nor is the small part executable when viewed as plain text), I feel the risk is negligible, the choice is yours.

[MailScanner]
IgnoreProcess=MailWasher.exe

[MailScanner]
IgnoreProcess=AnotherIgnoredProcessExample.exe,MailWasher.exe

sded, lee16, DavidR thank u all 4 taking time trying to solve my problem, cheers

Your welcome, don’t forget to let us know what have you chosen/done to resolve the problem. It would/could help others using the forum search function in the future.

I have to reply on your last msg David. I don’t think it is a good idea to lower security by adding an exceptionline. But on the other hand: I don’t see ‘the’ solution at the moment either… ???

I also work with Mailwasher (latest Pro version) and in my case Mailsher is not able to delete mail from the server when Avast! 4.6 is active (see attached jpg-file). I have to shut down Avast! and I don’t think that is what should be done. Up until 4.5 no problems so IMO there should be an official solution for this, not by editing the ini-file.

I don’t have any complaints on Avast! and I even promote the program, but this problem should be solved without lowering the securitylevel!

  1. Your system, your choice and I think that I made that quite clear “This will obviously lower your protection” along with the rest of the paragraph.

  2. No problems deleting mail from the server, either with or without the edit to avast4.ini.

  3. I wasn’t having any problems, I chose to add that entry, simply to stop the double scanning of the mail on a server and again when I downloaded it. Especially since I personally feel there is a very low risk by not scanning header details and only 103 lines of the email (no attachments) in plain text.

So I believe if you are having problems deleting from the server there is another issue here (UIDL?), that is the question.

I agree with you that lowering the securitylevel when the messages are on the server (and in plain text also) cannot do much harm.
But my point is that today there are lots of people using a computer as if it is using a dishwasher: it is supposed to run it’s program and the user can do something else…
A lot of people are afraid of running commandline programs or editing files like autoexec.bat or ini-files (result of questionnaire I handed out to new members of a computerclub ;)).
That’s what was the intention of my reaction above.

The first thing I thought on that error (UIDL) was that something had changed on the mailserver. Then I shut down Avast! and the problem was gone. I repeated this twice after rebooting the system, but everytime the problem popped up again. So I edited avast.ini by adding your suggestion. Guess what: problem solved :).

The thing to think about here is: why gives mailwasher different errors on this matter? I don’t have the solution yet… >:(
