indicate to scan on reboot etc. etc, what to scn edtc etc

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

How are you trying to get to the Menu? (right click avast icon, select ‘Start avast! Antivirus’ and right click on the screen or click the menu icon if there is on on the skin you are using)
This tool should do as a work around, try the ‘Schedule Boot-Time Scan’ using RejZoR’s AEC avast! External Control Tool
Obviously this is not a resolution as there is much more in the menu so I would suggest you uninstall avast (download the latest version first), reboot, install (latest version), reboot.

No you shouldn’t have to register again provided you still have the email with your registration key. If not register again and either your old one or a new one will be sent.
