Main Program won't open

When i click the desktop icon to access the actual virus scanner, my cursor turns into a waiting symbol for a few seconds then i get nothing. the main program won’t launch. the monitors seem to work fine, but the main program won’t launch

Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?
Do you use Internet Explorer as browser?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

I use XP.
I don’t use any other AntiVirus
I obviously have internet explorer, but i mostly use firefox

I’ve tried repairing and uninstalling, i’ve even tried removing stray registry entries between uninstalls.

If you go to your avast! folder, can you manually run

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashsimpl.exe
or
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashsimp2.exe

What do you get?

same thing… a waiting cursor and the nothing. but something to note is that the processes actually stay in memory (Taskmanager)…

Can you save a list of the running processes?
Use http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html to save as a txt file.
Any of them could be blocking avast! to load…
Do you use WindowBlinds?

Nope, no windowblinds…

Can you post a little bit more about:
RedGate.Profiler.Service.exe, daemon.exe, MACVNTFY.EXE, PtLUWorker.exe, atitray.exe, ContextLauncher.exe
I do not recognize them…

These ones could be problematic… what happens if you close them and test?
WinVNC.exe, TrayServer.exe, TeaTimer.exe, Proxomitron.exe

It’s not easy for a one shot guess… but if I can, Proxomitron…

I should mention that it did open at one point, and most of these processes were around then.

redgate.profiler.service.exe is something used for getting performance indicators on .net applications. (had it for a wihle)
daemon.exe = daemon-tools, its for emulating cd images (had it)

Macvntfy is from a program called xplay, it’s for ipods… i don’t remember how long i’ve had it, but i closed it and still nothing

PtLUWorker.exe is a pda sync process.

atitray = ATI graphics card driver

ContextLauncher.exe is a program i wrote… shouldn’t cause any problems, and the main program has loaded alongside it before.

(It wasn’t proxomitron, and its’ worked with proxomitron and teatimer and winvnc before)

Armedmonkey, it’s not easy… :frowning:
I helped another user with this problem, maybe you can search the board.
He should only start avast in Safe Mode…
If you change avast4.ini file settings (click Settings in my signature) transforming your settings into the skinless appearance, will it work?
Other possibility, but I’m just guessing, if you change the Database=ODBC value for Database=XML
Did you downgrade from Pro (or Trial) version to Home?
Are you at the administrator account?

i tried those… nothing.

How do you start in safe mode?

I didn’t downgrade, and i’m on an administrator account.

thanks for trying to help me by the way:)

i’m going to try to find the thread you are talking about

[edit]I found the thread, and i tried disabling skinning and registering the file… no good =(

Boot Windows in Safe Mode (pressing F8 while booting) and after boot, start avast! through Start Menu > avast! antivirus > avast!

Can you post a link to it? Maybe I can dig there and found something…

oh i thought you meant start avast in safe mode…

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=15270.0 ← thread

Sorry… but if you’ve tried to register and nothing… that thread did not help.
Strange, I never had this problem… I can’t follow any way to find a solution…
I think but nothing…
Did you try to uninstall and install again?

yeah i tried that… well thanks for trying to help, i think i’ll just hope that i don’t have to do any manual searches until the new version comes out, or maybe i’ll beta test =)

It’s not a problem with avast! version or update…
Your computer has some different thing that is avoiding avast to launch…
Have you said that the processes were running in background?
If so, if you kill them and try to start again?
Did you ever run the avast! interface or never?

i tried running it right after the first time i installed it and it ran fine.

Got an idea, go to the skins directory, find other skin, download and double click over it to install…
What do you get?

it runs ashsimpl.exe and i still don’t get anything. It’s not a skin problem because i tried disabling skins already…

Sorry… the end for me
