After clicking on the avast icon, the program tests the memory and then doesnt open up, leaving me unable to scan my system or do anything else.
I have already un-installed and re-installed.
Any suggestions…

It sounds quite strange. Try to change Database key of data\avast4.ini file in folder of avast! to XML. Then restart avast! or whole computer. Please, let us known if this has solved your problem…
how do i change it?
- In Notepad, open the file AVAST4.INI
(C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWIL SOFTWARE\AVAST4\DATA). - Find section
[Common] - Into this section insert (or change) this row:
Database=XML - Save the file and restart your computer.
didnt work. still scans memory and then it appears on bar at bottom of screen but when u click on it nothing happens
just to inform you, I have fixed the problem. I have no idea how or why it is working now but it is. The solution you gave me didnt work so I advise anyone else who has the same problem not to follow that advise. I re-stalled it again and it works now.

Haven’t you install some system patch or service pack or some other product that may have install these?
I am glad to hear your problem has disappeared but we should track events on your system to find out what’s happened…
reinstall
