Majority applications are opening as DVD Maker

I have seen something similar to this problem, but this one is a little different. Most of the applications, but not all of them, are opening as Windows DVD Maker. The program is continuously trying to open and creates multiple windows in turn slowing down the system. I’ve been trying to close all the windows, but they keep popping up and making the system slow.

Any ideas on what do do?

Read here … http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 … and use the programs suggested by essexboy, run those programs at separate times, and post the resulting logs in this same thread that you started.

I am unable to run malware bytes - it trys to open in the DVD program. Should I move on to OTL?

hey yes plasese move on to otl and see if you could get that to run. and attach that log.

Are you running XP, vista or 7

Go start > run and type in cmd
In the black box that opens type :

assoc .bat=batfile

Then try to run this batch file (assuming it is XP)

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/xp_fileassoc.bat

The computer is running 7 - here are my files from OTL

There are a few bad boy files in there, and I have found (courtesy of 7 forums) a complete default reg zip file ;D
System restore is also inoperative

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

ASSOCIATION FIX

Download the zip file from the link below to your desktop
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/All_Default_File_Extentions.zip
Extract all reg files
Double click each in turn and allow them to merge

Once all the above has done could you let me know what problems remain

Here are the results from the last fix as well as the latest scan. I am downloading the next two steps now.

Scanned with farbar and also did the association fix. Here’s the results from Fabar. The computer isn’t opening the DVD program anymore! You are amazing - you always fix my problems

Anything else I need to do?

Thank you once again,
-m

Forgot to attach the FSS.text file - sorry

The logs are good but there are a lot of services not running, which is a tad weird as they should block you from going on the net… How is the computer behaving now ?

The computer seems to working fine. The owner of the computer doesn’t use the internet with his computer too often, but I have it connected via cat and its connecting fine. I’m currently updating the computer now.

I will let you know if anything comes up.

Thank you!

Nice to hear ;D
