Makaroni.exe

Hello all,

My computer is running very slow and has been acting strange for a week. I initially thought I had too much data on it. It is a netbook, Compaq Mini 1.6GHz, 1M RAM, running with XP, so not a strong guy.
Avast 4.8 Professional is not detecting anything. I tried to run an online scan, Prevx, and the result is infection by makaroni.exe, mrpky.exe.

I don’t know much about viruses and computers in general but it seems to me that these programs are running only when I turn on the wireless connection and I try to open any flashdrive or SD card. These devices wouldn’t open easily and after trying to do so, I can be sure to have one of the malware openned in the task manager.
Strange, isn’t it?

Don’t know if that will help, but in order to use Skype in Belize, I need to pass by an open VPN called HotSpot Shield. It slows down the netbook a lot.

Shall I invest in that Prevx thing?
What to do in the task manager? Shall I just close these programs every time for now?

Thanks,
Marc

First

* Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
* Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
Note: Some security programs will flag Flash_Disinfector as being some sort of malware, you can safely ignore these warnings
* The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
* Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
* Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don’t delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

Next

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.

 • Once MBAM has finished scanning, if it finds the malware, click Remove.

why you’re still on v4.8? v5 may detect these threats with some additional module (check it at virustotal and we’ll see)…

Jtaylor83 you’re a hero! Did exactly what you said and it worked perfectly.
Thanks a lot for that and for your time.

Maxx, yeah maybe I should check updates more often.

Thanks again
Marc
