Making avast! automatically proceed with its recommended action

Okay boys and girls, here’s the thing: Is there anyway to make avast! automatically proceed with the suggested decision or just make it continue with moving the file to the chest instead of the suggested option? I just don’t like the need of it having me to be constantly present. Since I’m going for a thorough scan this time, it would make it so much easier for me and I’d have time to do other work.

I’d be grateful for any help I might receive // Robert Eriksson aka DeeJaySwede

Hi DeeJaySwede,

Are you talking about avast! stopping when doing an on-demand scan upon finding a virus?

If so, the automatic option is not available in the home version of avast, there has to be something to tempt you to upgrade…

There is a way around it, however, with the fast approaching Version 5, I believe this will not be an issue. I think in V5 (free) it will have the automated option…

These automated options are only available in the Pro version. This is a limitation of the Home (free) version that it has interactive input requirement, there have to be differences in the Home/Pro version and this is one of them, the programmers have to eat ;D

This will however change in avast version 5.0 when it is released, in the meantime try this work around.

  • In the Home version you can check the option “Don’t show this window again” when the first virus warning appears, select the “No action” button. This way, no action will be taken and you will given the results at the end of the scan (and you can perform actions from there). Over time this will become less of an issue, as the resident, on-access scanners are designed to intercept infection before it gets into your system.

  • There was one suggestion to place something like the eicar virus test file at the start of the first drive to be scanned in a file like ~a-eicar.com that should soon be detected and you can do the option “Don’t show this window again” when the first virus warning appears, select the “No action” button. So you should have a list of files waiting your action.

Is that setting included in the 5.0 beta? Otherwise, my dad has got a copy of Pro for his working computer, both owned by him as a private person, are you allowed to register the same copy at two different computers?

No, one pro license per computer.

It will be in the free V5 though:

Well, then I’ll just have to stick with the quick scan function and some free spyware scanners until V5 is released.

Thanks anyway guys.

No problem, glad I could help.

Thorough is also by its design very thorough (it scans all files) and perhaps a little overkill for routine use, were a Standard scan without archives should be adequate. Archive (zip, rar, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast’s Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned.

I have only ever done a Through Scan with Archives once shortly after installation just to ensure a clean start state, but with XP for example avast will do a boot-time scan after installation if you select it, this I believe will be quicker and reasonably effective. Like everything in life things are a compromise.
