Making my laptop not visible in the network

Hello,

How can I be sure that nobody is able to see my laptop in the network and isn´t able to take a look in the files i´ve stored on my laptop?
Because I’ve seen colleagus ‘hacking’ into each others laptop. They where able to see and copy each other’s files without knowing about it.
I realy don’t want to see someone messing with my files or settings.

I’ve got Avast Internet Security 6, the newest beta. Is setting the firewall to Public - High risk zone enough? I also need to mention that I’m connected to the internet via a public hotspot, but you need to login to the hotspot.

Sorry for my very weak English and thank you very much for your help!

Kind regards,
Chris

Can someone please answer my question? I want to feel safe if I go to work tomorrow

Hello,

I think you don’t want everyone can just see all your files in the network. I suggest to store all your porn on a portable hard disk drive. NO-one will copy it from you then. You can also destroy your laptop, but then you also lose all your files :frowning: It’s also good to not have all your pron in the root of your hard disk drive.

Hopefully I get a normal answer, thanks in advance!

I thought he said he wanted a normal answer!

Thank you, but I think I can’t set a Network rule via the how-to, because networking isn’t a program.
Can’t I simply set the firewall to Public-High risk zone and be sure no-one can see my laptop in the network?

Thanks

No, the firewall in avira has nothing to do with the firewall in the network. It will only block outside connections, but you will be visible in the network.

Yea, but the name of the TS is a little confusing. BTW: your quote fails

I hope someone here is able to answer my question :-*

Thx in advance, I realy appreciate your help!

You have to hide the SSID from the network. The only problem is that hiding sginals is almost impossible. You can also try to connect to the internet using LAN instead of WLAN. Who is your internet provider?

You mean hiding a router?
I mean hiding my laptop from beeing seen in the network.

Man, this topic is viewed over 100 times, but still no normal answer, thank you guys! ???

Hopefully someone can finally give me a good answer? Otherwise I’ll return to Avira

Kind regards

hi, I’ll make an attempt,
You can disable your computers file sharing if you don’t use it under network connection properties.(not an avast setting)
hope that helps

Hi Chris,

I’m not a networking expert, but since no one else has really stepped up, let me give it a try.

First, I can’t answer your firewall question. But you should be able to accomplish what you want from within Windows. (These instructions assume the Control Panel Classic View. If you see categories, switch to Classic View.)

  • If you’re running XP, go to the Control Panel, click on Network Connections, then click on the connection you’re concerned about (Local Area Connection if you’re connected to the network via a wire, the wireless connection if wireless), click Properties, then uncheck File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

  • If you’re running Windows 7 (Vista should be similar), click on Control Panel, then Network and Sharing Center. In the section of the page titled View Your Active Networks, check which type your active connection is: Home Network, Work Network, or Public Network. If it’s a Work Network and you change it to a Public Network, you’ll accomplish your goal, but if your IT department has to have access to your PC you might mess them up. In that case instead of changing it to a Public Network, on that same page click on Change Homegroup and Sharing Options, then click on Change Advanced Sharing Settings. Click the drop-down arrow next to Home or Work, then choose Turn off Network Discovery, Turn Off File and Printer Sharing, and Turn Off Public Folder Sharing.

Again, I’m not a networking expert, but this ought accomplish your goal.

Thanks for the answers, problem solved
