malicious URL blocking popups continue after "clean" scans

doing battle with baddies to get control of my PC back. MBAM and avast installed and now say clean. following sticky post on procedure, MBAM log is listed below. OTL downloaded and logs attached. downloaded aswMBR but, nothing happened… no dosbox program, unable to run from either desktop or c:, or in a cmd window. ??? also since one of the baddies was a sirfef type thing, I got farbar and attached the log also.
Avast pops a malicious url blocked about every 3-5 minutes, though, so, something is still redirecting from somewhere…also, how to print/attach an avast log?

Any help is much appreciated.
thanks,
Rob

1.Have you done a avast boot time scan?. ALSO DO MALWARE BYTES DEEP FULL SCAN IN COMPUTER SAFE MODE.

checking your OTL logs. YOU HAVE 2 VERSIONS OF JAVA INSTALLED. Is it up to date? there is exploits with java 7 now. REMOVE ALL VERSIONS OF JAVA JUST IN CASE. And see if is doing the same thing?

  1. Check ie8 Hosts file should have 1 entry (local host 127.0.0.1) IN WINDOWS SYSTEM 32 FOLDER.
May need a run of KASPERSKY TDSKILLER

May need more analysis from a malware expert. If you do banking online then your at risk!

@ bobo1
Not that it may need ‘analysis from a malware expert’ it does need it; leave the malware cleaning to the qualified malware removal specialists.

MBAM Quick scan is fine for these purposes and a boot-time scan also not required for this.

Don’t suggest any tools that could impact the users system (TDSSKiller) leave that to the specialists who will guide them through it.

@ robert_p1
A malware removal specialist has been informed of your topic.

@DavidR

thank you for your reply, and for finding a resource to assist me.

@ bobo1
thank you for taking the time to reply, and for reading the logs. Based on the behavior, i would guess it is somekind of rootkit that is just well entangled/hidden. I did in fact do 2 boot scans of avast, detecting and killing the aforementioned sirfef on scan 1, clean on scan 2.

rob

further poking… created a custom scan in avast, and
avast rootkit scan (deep) shows the following log file:
avast action box does not allow me to do anything to these files (move to chest or delete).

In all honesty in relation to sirfef (type malware) I wouldn’t go doing too much on your own (other than the basic analysis scans recommended in the ‘logs to assist malware removal topic’) as you could make things much worse.

Essexboy who deals with most of these is off-line now, so availability of the volunteers is the main issue here.

This looks like Phibar rather than sirfef

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_disclaimer_ENG.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_extraction.png

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

tsskiller will download, but will not run. (hourglass, thennothing). Will not run from a clean boot, or from a clean boot in safe mode.
Not sure if I should procede past this point with the other steps, or additional assistance to get this to run. (noting that aswMBR would also not run…)

thanks for the continued assistance.
Rob

OK that tells me that it may be something totally differnt in the MBR area

So lets check which one I am dealing with

[*] Download RogueKiller and save it on your desktop.
[*]Quit all programs
[*] Start RogueKiller.exe.
[*] Wait until Prescan has finished …
[*] Click on Scan

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/RogueKiller/RGKRScan.png

[*]Wait for the end of the scan.
[*] The report has been created on the desktop.
[*] Click on the Delete button.

OK I can see it

I need you to download:
gparted-live-0.10.0-3.iso (115.1 MB)

Create a bootable CD, for Gparted from the ISO image.

You can use ImgBurn do this.

Now boot off of the newly created Gparted CD.

You should be here… Press ENTER

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/Gpart-Start.GIF

By default, “do not touch keymap” is highlighted.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/Gpart-keyselect.GIF

Leave this setting alone and just press ENTER.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/Gpart-continue.GIF

Choose your language and press ENTER. English is default [33]

At the mode prompt enter 0, press ENTER

You will now be taken to the main GUI screen below

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/Gpart-partitions.GIF

According to your logs, the partition that you want to delete is 10 MB

Right click this partition and select delete .

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/GPart-delete.GIF

The Partition has gone

Now select Apply

Now you should be here:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/Areyousure.GIF

Select Apply after double checking that the right partition was deleted

Is “boot” next to your System drive (100Mb)?
If “boot” is not next to your System drive under “Flags”, right-mouse click the System drive (100Mb) while in Gparted and select Manage Flags

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/GPart-flags.GIF

In the menu that pops up, place a checkmark in boot like the picture below, then close :

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/GPart-bootflag.GIF

Under File select Quit

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/Gpart-quit.GIF

You will see this small Popup

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/Gpart-reboot.GIF

Choose reboot and then press OK.

Reboot to normal windows and run TDSSKiller again

Not sure if it was intentional or or not to link 2.5.6 as 2.5.7 is their latest release

http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Ta link fixed ;D

got through those steps. TDSSkiller now runs. changed parameters to include two additional choices.
report file attached.

Thank you for your continued assistance.
Rob

OK could you now continue with the OTL fix and the combofix run from the first fix post then once run let me know how the computer is behaving

OTL fix run, combofix run. reboots.
computer seems happy, and is quiet (no malicious URL blocking popups…which stopped after killing the diskpartion)
avast says clean on both a quickscan and a rootkit custom scan – which was finding the crud, just not able to kill it.
I thought OTL made a report, but danged if I can find it…
Combofix report attached (you didn’t ask, but… to be complete) but, for a few moments, at least… it feels like things are back to normal.

thanks again for all of your assistance.
Rob

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands [resethosts] [emptytemp] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

[*]Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the “x” and “/”) then click OK

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Misc%20screen%20shots/CF_Uninstall-1.jpg

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Go to control panel
[*]Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.gif

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

Upgrading Java:

[] Go to this site and click Do I have Java
[
] It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

[*]Go to Control Panel and select System
[*]Select System
[*]On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
[*]Select System Protection Tab
[*]Select Create at the bottom
[*]Type in a name i.e. Clean
[*]Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones

[*]GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
[*]Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
[*]Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
[*]For a few moments the system will make some calculations
[*]Select the More Options tab
[*]In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
[*]Select Delete on the pop up
[]Select OK
[
]Select Delete

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7729/mbamicontw5.gif

Malwarebytes. Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit

[*]Microsoft Windows Update

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?

Keep safe

Its been close to 24 hrs…of much more normal computing.

Thanks again for all of your help, and also for the consideration re: cleanup. FSS and aswMBR also I have removed. Java now says that it is uptodate, and is a necessary evil in my computing world.

Combofix uninstall was a little exciting, with a power cycle/reboot followed by a disk consistancy check that mashed a bunch of stuff around… but it did all come back ok, and scans cleanly.

MalwareBytes I have already as regular procedure. Hopefully avast and malwarebytes in tandem will keep it clean.

Again, many thanks.
Rob
