Malicious URL hijack

Hullo folks,

Like some others, I appear to have been infected with the malicious URL hijack that uses 68.169.92.53 to redirect me to some bogus sites when I do google searches.

I have run Avast and MBAM to no avail. I am running Windows XP SP3. Please let me know what additional scans I should do, or which logs I should run and attach.

Thanks for your help!

Same here!! in Firefox…my google search results are re-directed when I try to click on them

Follow this guide from our expert malware remover Essexboy

( post the logs here and not in the guide )

To avoid using multiple post with copy and paste you have to attach the log`s
Lower left corner: Additional Options > Attach ( Malwarebytes log / OTL log / aswMBR log ) save OTL log as ANSI
if the logs are too big, then upload to http://www.mediafire.com/ and post the download link here

Essexboy will look at the logs when he arrive here later today…

@Luvj19

start your own topic where you do the same, as helping multiple users in the same thread will only be chaos

Thanks peeps. I ran the scans. The log files are attached.

OTL and Extras files resaved as ANSI.

Does this occur in firefox only ?

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop

Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

[*]Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
[*]To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
[*]When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
[*]GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear.

Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Okley dokley. Here is the logfile, saved as ANSI.

We only use firefox, so I don’t know whether it happens in other browsers. It is pretty random too, so I can’t say for sure that it isn’t or hasn’t happened with explorer.

OK this looks like it may be a new one

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Files
ipconfig /flushdns /c

:Commands
[purity]
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[EMPTYFLASH]
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]
[Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Thanks essexboy… before I do this, should I be running this stuff in safe mode?

Normal mode would be best ;D

Okey doke,

ran everything like you said. Will report back in a couple of days to let you know if there have been any additional hijacks.

Really appreciate your help, essexboy!

When you are happy let me know and I will remove my tools, if not I will dig deeper

All right essexboy, I think things are fixed. I haven’t seen the hijack in a week.

Thanks for your amazing help. Please let me know if there’s anything else I need to do.

Cheers!

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems
