Malware Bytes/Avast Don't Agree

About a year ago, I got my laptop fixed (hardware problem), & when I started using my laptop again, I tried to update all of the software I had downloaded (as my laptop had been out of commission for about 2 years). This included Avast & Malware Bytes. The combination of these 2 updating crashed my computer & put it in an endless loop of trying to restart itself before it fully booted up. I had to take it back to my computer guy, who had to uninstall the update for Malware bytes (just the update, not the whole thing) just so I could turn the computer on.

Today, I made the stupid mistake of downloading something that I shouldn’t have, & now I’ve got malware all throughout my system. I’m running my old version of Malware Bytes now, but it’s several years old, as I can’t update it for fear of crashing my computer again. Because of the malware my computer currently has, I can’t run Avast, & other sources cite Malware Bytes as the best way to get rid of the problems that are preventing Avast from running & causing a slew of other issues (which I will deal with one at a time, as they come up, Avast is my biggest concern for now).

Has anyone else had this problem with Avast & Malware Bytes not playing nice, & if so, how have others fixed it?

I’ve not had the problem, but I’m thinking about this. Have you tried this?
Download the MBAM update, but don’t install yet. Close your browser, install your update, rt-click the Avast icon> Avast Shields Control>Disable for 10 minutes or whatever length of time you need for an MBAM scan. MBAM runs on demand, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
