Malware (?) infection - any help much appreciated

Hi there,

My initial problem was that when I tried to run a full system scan using Avast, my laptop would just shut down.

I found this thread: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=144787.0

Which directed me to this thread: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

So far, I have downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-malware and run a scan. It said that it had detected some non-malware problems. I exported the scan report as advised in the other thread, but there was nothing in it… I don’t know if maybe I’m doing something wrong?

So I thought I would try the next step anyway, however, when I started the scan using Farbar, my laptop once again shut down, so I haven’t got any further than that.

I have noticed that my laptop has been running a lot more slowly recently, and error messages have come up with the subjects ‘JVM aborted’ and ‘C++ Runtime Library’ on startup - I’m afraid I don’t know much about computers, so I’m not sure if these are related

Anyway, that’s the situation, any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

Can you run FRST in safe mode ?

Reboot the computer and immediately press and hold F8
On the menu that appears select safe mode with networking

Yes, FRST worked in safe mode.

The scan reports are attached

Could you let me know if Avast runs a scan on completion of this

Hi,

Yes, having completed those steps I was able to run a full system scan - which concluded ‘no threat found’

The logs you asked for are attached

Essexboy will be off-line now, 12:24AM in the UK - he should hopefully be back on line later today and ckeck the new logs.

Any further problems before I tidy up ?

No, everything seems to be working fine now

Is there anything I could/should install to use alongside Avast to prevent similar things in the future?

Look at my setup below (My sig). Has kept me virus/malware free for over a year now.

Comodo FW w/ D+, MCShield (USB Protection), MBAM Premium, Avast! Free, Unchecky, Zemana Anti Keylogger…

You don’t need the Firewall, Windows will suffice. The Anti-Keylogger you don’t need. Unchecky keeps out the adware with MBAM to clean any that does get through.

In that case methinks I will send you on your merry way

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove tools

Download and run Delfix

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

If you do need to keep Java then download JavaRa
Run the programme and select Remove Java Runtime. Uninstall all versions of Java present
Once done then run it again and select Update Java runtime > Download and install Latest version

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/javara.JPG

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/CryptoPrevent.JPG

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Unchecky

Click on the link above to be taken to Unchecky.com
click the very large Download button.
click Save
Click Open folder
Right click on the Unchecky_setup and choose to Run as Administrator
Once open click the Install button.
Then click on Finish
Unchecky is now installed and will help you keep unwanted check boxes unchecked, this is a fire and forget programme

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

Ok, I’ll keep an eye on it for the next day or so, and follow your other suggestions

Thanks very much for all your help
