Malware Pakes-AKM

Dear experts,

Avast! have found on my PC (Windows XP SP2) a trojan

location: C:\WINDOWS\System32\dpcdl.dll
malware: Win32:Pakes-AKM [trj]
UPS Version: 080319-0, 2008-03-19

and it is not able to cancel, remove or rename it… no actions seems to be good because the file seems to be “in use”… I have tried also with Avast!, Spybot and AdAware in F8 mode with no luck.

I have read on this forum another topic related to this trojan, but, please, I have really not understood the moves to beat it, I am not a great expert…

I have downloaded Combofix.exe (from the two sites you recommend) but on doubleclick I have the message “this is not a valid 32 bit application” so I downloaded it from an other site… I have a 1.52Mb program on my desktop, I run it and when it finishes (5 minutes) it restarts the PC and on the reboot it remains for 30 minutes a window “please do not use other programs” and then stop… so I did something wrong with it or, better, I do not understand how to use it… my impression is that I used it well (I had another problem with file paging which now is fixed) but I could not obtain a log…

Could you please help me? Thank you very very much!!!

Mazzarri

I suggest (step 3 will be useful to clean in-use files):

  1. Disable System Restore and reenable it after step 3.
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on.
  4. Use SUPERantispyware and/or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
  5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  6. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster or Windows Advanced Care.
  7. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

Thank you Tech for your suggestions.
I do not understand steps 1 and 3… how can I Disable System Restore and reenable it?? And then how can I Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on??
Pardon my zero level speaking but I am really not a good pc user!!
thanks again
Mazzarri

Disable System Restore on Windows ME, XP or Vista. System Restore cannot be disabled on Windows 9x and it’s not available in Windows 2k.

Click on the avast Menu button (or right click the skin area).
Choose Schedule Boot Time Scan.
Doing so displays a dialog allowing you to schedule virus scanning.
Check Archives, if you want scan all the archives.
Specify whether all the disks or just a specific folder should be scanned.
Select Advanced options for scheduling details.
Select how to automatically process infected files.
Choose how to automatically process infected system files.
Click the Schedule button to confirm the settings.

Dear mr. Tech, OK, I have understood

For point 3

Select how to automatically process infected files.
Choose how to automatically process infected system files

I have selected “put infected files in the chest” is it OK?

I will do it asap and then I will post the result

Thanks

Send to Chest.

Ignore/do nothing.

WOW!! ;D ;D ;D

Thank you mr. Tech… points 1 to 3 were sufficient to kill that stupid thing!!!

Now I am gonna perform points 4 to 7, just in order to go completely after your suggestions and to immunize my PC for the next future!

Thank you very very much for your precious work and your kind tips!!! Now my PC is safe, thanks to you and to all the team of forum.avast.com!!

Mazzarri, you’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)

Hi Mr. Tec,
I have a question for you expert.
As point number 4 I used first of all AdAware and I have found 0 (zero) problems… 1 hour complete scan… I was not satisfied so I used Spyware Terminator and after 25 minutes complete scan it founds 280 problems (6 critical)… I do not really understand, how it is possible? I don’t think AdAware is no good at all as it seems… what is your opinion for that?
Thank you very much!
Good Evening
Mazzarri

It never found anything on my computer except tracking cookies. I think it is a fake program ;D
