I am not surprised if I was a hacker I would most likely hide a virus as a Symantec/Norton component since it is one of the most widely used antivirus programs around unfortunately…
They do the same for MS Updates and any number of social engineering tricks you get people to either download patches or click links on the email.
Common sense will combat this type of issue, don’t download update patches, etc. or click links in unsolicited (you didn’t ask for it, e.g. subscribe to some notifications, etc.), unexpected emails and delete the email.
