Yes it does quite a decent scan, and it is a complete av solution. You can use it for free as a home user.
For you there are a lot of alternatives if you want to use free programs on a Windows computer, here you can find quite a list of programs that do the same as paid versions and cost you nothing:

Be happy you found avast, I use it now for years and years, and it kept my computer free of viruses,
for malware you can use additional free software like Super AntiSpyware Free Edition and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, also completely free, they can run alsongside avast Home, then install a free software firewall like ZoneAlarm and you are set to go, and remember - good info is worth many a dime -,
