fredvries, avast is an antimalware (antivirus + antispyware). I think Spybot does not add protection anymore… neither could be used as a trusted second opinion.
You ‘don’t have to’ do anything, the choice is yours, I have both SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) Pro (which is a paid resident anti-spyware) and MBAM free as an on-demand anti-malware scan option.
Well, it’s your choice. I think MBAM is enough as a second opinion. But installing Super will be another opinion (although it installs drivers and services (?) even in the on-demand free version, I don’t like this…).
Being that you’re using avast! Home, assume you’re looking for free solution(s). Hence keep in mind that the free versions of MBAM and SAS do not have resident real-time protection or auto update.
If you want an additional free AS app with real-time protection and auto update may want to consider using Windows Defender, and use MBAM for on-demand scans for any malware removal.
It’s the removal of malware from a system is where MBAM and SAS do very well overall compared to the other similar apps. I’ve updated the link in my previous post that was broken by recent changes at the site.
I’m not saying layered defense is not a good (better) solution.
Just saying that you may overkill the system, lose a lot of time updating on-demand scannings for second opinions.
I just want and need a faster approach to my computer security.
You should make a sensible choice not to use overkill. So a resident av, some non-resident anti-malware scanners, NoScript and RequestPolicy extensions in the Mozilla browser, online update and patch system for third party software (Secunia), a sensible safe hex click policy will take you far in this respect without leaning on your CPU to much,
