When i do a manual scan by right clicking on avast taskbar icon > Start avst! - Antivirus
and then afterwards look at the folders in Windows Explorer - the folder and file icons have disappeared?
This doesn’t happen if one goes to Explorer, select a folder, right click, scan avast - but this is much slower.
Be grateful for suggestions why this is! I’ve done it twice this evening and rebooted in between to check it wasn’t another application causing it.
We will need more information to be able to help you:
Which OS are you using? Is it up to date? win98
What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number? latest downloaded 17 aug 07
How much RAM (memory) do you have in this computer? 500mb
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past? NO did have AVG
Any other security programs that could interfere? NO
I’ve had a look for all likely glitches. I can only assume that there is some corruption somewhere left over from another application. I’m just about to rebuild another machine and wanted to check avast again before i install it on a new machine with win 2k. Some features i particularly like in avast that’s why after a bit of testing i was going to use it in preference to AVG. But now i’m wondering!
This has been discussed befire. I believe it comes down to a resourse issue. It’s not that there may not be enough resources, just that win 98 doesn’t do a good job managing them.
A search for “disappearing icons” without the quotes will turn up a few threads. This among them.
Thanks for that link - sorry i missed it [i don’t seem to find what i want when i do a search]. win98se is poor in a number of ways mainly USB management and other resources as you say. I did use the unofficial service pack which helped with USBs. But time to dump and use win2k - part of my intermediate migration to Linux!
Thanks for the assurance about win2k. I basically wanted to check this last possible glitch out.
Well, in this case, the Igor’s answer doesn’t seem to apply as we don’t have a ‘low-resources’ situation…
Although we know Windows 98 is very weak on managing resources (RAM).
