Manual Update (offline) impossible

Hi,
my notebook at home only has a dial-up connection, so I’d like to update manually with the pack from “http://www.avast.com/download-update” I get from a fast PC at work.
Even after deinstalling avast v. 5.0.377, cleaning with avast 5 removal tool and ccleaner, reboot and install v. 5.0.396 it always says:
Please report follong errorcodes:
Ver:5.0.377
SI:0x00000002
ST:0xFFFFFFFE
LE:0x00000000

I have a Pentium III notebook, WinXP SP3 and ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, which is open to AvastSvc.exe and avast.setup.

Besides: I can force update from the avast-UI with my dial-up connection but it lasts 10 times as long as v. 4.8 (about 10 minutes). Any ideas?
THX!

yep, same with me… got the same error msg…

Are you sure you installed the latest (396) version?

I had the same problem for days, I tried 1 minute ago and it’s the same…

Some things to try…(bear in mind I am guessing a bit…)

SI:0x00000002 = Error 2 - File not Found

-Have you updated to the latest version of avast! (5.0.396) → The error suggests that you haven’t.
-Can you try to download the updater again → It may have been corrupted…

-You could also try a repair of avast!:

Avast RepairXP

Can you try a repair of Avast?
Start–>control panel–>add/remove programs -->avast antivirus → click remove → scroll down and click repair

Avast RepairVista

Can you try a repair of Avast?
Start -->control panel -->Programs -->uninstall a program -->avast! Antivirus -->Click 'Uninstall/Change -->Scroll down and click repair

First of all, thank you for your help!
@ spg SCOTT:
Yes, I have version 5.0.396 installed… What was going on better this weekend was the time of the update (virus-defs and programm-check), it now lasts about 5 minutes only (dial-up).
I was downloading the updater several times from different computers from http://www.avast.com/download-update - always the same negative result, see my first post.
I will try out your proposal of repairing avast!

Yesterday I tried a repair of avast!, but no change concerning the manual virusdefinitions-update from http://www.avast.com/download-update. And - once again - I have the latest version 5.0.396. I really consider of switching back to avast! 4.8…
Any other helpful ideas?

Hi,

Let me try it first, still downloading.

Cheers,

Hi,

After i download and do the VPS update,

There is nothing error notification display at my notebook.

But only show that my VPS already up to date, and then from avast ask me to reinstall avast engine because my avast not properly installed.

Cheers,

I finally got it!!!
After updating to version 5.0.418 the vpsupd.exe worked!
Once again thanks for your help.
Arabella

This was a one-time sucess! Next manual virusdefinitions-update failed again…
So I’m hoping for the next program-version!
:-[

Still no change, offline virus-defs-update impossible, despite repair/new installation after cleaning/switching off firewall - no ideas?
???

try installing this one http://files.avast.com/files/beta/5.0.454/setup_av_free.exe

After updating to version 5.0.462, the manual (offline) virus-definitions-update did work once (see above). Next day, next vpsupd.exe the known message appeared again… :-
So STILL waiting for next program-version and hope this problem will be fixed! I’M NOT ALONE!

I’m on dialup too, and it takes me around 5 minutes or so if nothing else is running. By manual, you just clicked on “update engine and virus definitions” under maintenance=>updates, right?

@nuz
I’m trying to update offline with the vpsupd.exe from another PC with Internet-connection. Please read the whole thread.
When on dial-up, it lasts a time till something happens, that’s right. You see this when update is complete, download-time and time of whole process.

I might have missed this in an earlier posting, plus I’ve never yet played with the vpsupd specific to v5 (wasn’t even sure it was available yet), so this may be totally off-base. On the offline computer, do you need to temporarily disable the self-protect thing while running vpsupd? You didn’t in 4.8, but of course there’s been major changes to the way updates work in 5.

I’m in essentially the same position, my wife’s computer doesn’t have internet access and I’ve been using the 4.8 vpsupd once a month or so on hers. Haven’t yet upgraded hers to 5, but of course without internet access her likelihood of running into malware is much lower.

I’d like to see a “sticky” on this matter (offline updates), since obviously there’s bits and pieces of info about it all over the forums which don’t fit neatly together.

You say it takes 5 mins to update Virus defintions on dial-up. Huh! I am on BSNL WLL(Dial-up) and updating Avast! takes about 1 min 43 secs to be precise. The updates are small(about 250kb max and 25kb min) so you say it takes 5 mins to download 250kb? You must be fibbing. Ask DavidR, he is also on dial-up.

After another try, which ended as usual, I started WinXP in safe mode and - astonishing - avast was updated! Maybe this is helpful to find the fault…

Ok, now I am guessing but it seems that something within avast! is interfering…

I wouldn’t have thought that the self protection module would have an effect - I don’t think it should - but maybe try the update in normal mode with the self protection module off?

Open GUI → ‘Settings’ in the top right → ‘Troubleshooting’ tab -->Un check ‘enable self defense module’
