Manual Updates and the Avast Icon

It would seem as though Avast have recently changed their perception of what constitutes a protected machine.

I have had Avast Free AV on countless machines for many years, and the Avast system has allowed the user to choose the option to do manual updates for both definitions and programs, which I have done, and the interface and the icon in the system tray have always reported that my machine was fully protected. This meant that the icon in the system tray would spin whenever Avast was interfacing with whatever I was doing, whether that was opening a browser or receiving/sending e-mails, etc.

Having had to do a clean install yesterday of Avast, and using the exact same settings as previously re. the manual updates, Avast now reports that the machine is not fully protected, and the icon has an exclamation mark and no longer spins, meaning that I no longer know when Avast is doing something.

Is there a way around this, please?

Avast now reports that the machine is not fully protected,
there should be some more info if you open the program .... seems something is not turned on

Thanks for the response, Pondus.

Everything is now OK on this front. The problem (I think) would seem to have been that Avast have included another tick box about warning against setting for non automatic updating. Removed the tick, and all’s good with the icon now. So, many thanks.
