I just installed MBAM 2.0 Free for the first time.
Do I have to activate it there in the Dashboard before using it or something?
When I tried updating the database from there in the Popup that came up from the Taskbar, the update locked up after a couple of seconds. I then closed MBAM … I believe I wound up having to do it from the Task Manager.
I then tried the database update again, this time from the link in the Dashboard. Well … the database update did get going, but it is going at a snail’s pace. After 40 minutes, the progress indicator is no further along than ¼ of the way. The old MBAM would have finished the entire database update in between 30 to 40 minutes on my Dial Up. At the rate this database update was going with MBAM 2.0, it was going to take several hours. So, there is definitely something wrong somewhere.
Any ideas?
Could my having installed avast 9.0.2016 last night have anything to do with this?
Are the MBAM 2.0 Advanced Settings only for the Pro version? Otherwise, why are they greyed out?
Ahhh, I believe you hit the nail on the head, Pondus. That has to be it. What I downloaded just barely yesterday and installed was MBAM 2.00.0.1000. So, yeah, it makes sense that if MBAM 2.00.1.1004 or whatever Program Update barely came out today … my MBAM database update attempt this morning no doubt first went into downloading the Program Update before the database update.
That brings up the question then …
Isn’t there a setting I can set so that any Program Updates do NOT automatically download? I didn’t see that anywhere. If I recall correctly, we had that setting in the old MBAM. I certainly don’t want Program Updates to start downloading automatically upon bringing up MBAM cuz that’s too much for my Dial Up. New versions of MBAM I would have to wait until I’m using my sister’s High Speed Internet like I was yesterday.
Great info in that link, Schmidthouse.
With that heads up in there that in 2 or 3 weeks they’re going to come up with yet another Program Update … for right now, I’m just going to go back down to MBAM 1.75. Once that new Program Update comes out, I’ll download it at my sister’s house.
Uh Oh! Am I just not seeing it or does MBAM 2.0 not have the File Assassin tool?
I HAVE used that on occasion. That would bite if MBAM 2.0 doesn’t have that.
One thing to watch with MBAM 2, especially the Premium (formerly Pro) version because of its resident protection. Nowhere in the installation instructions is there any mention of the need to reboot after installing, although that’s pretty much standard procedure for any starts-with-Windows app. I had several problems after installation which cleared right up after rebooting … I passed that along to them with the suggestion that they explicitly add the reboot to the instructions. Or better yet, also add a “reboot now” button to the end of the process, same as avast and a number of other popular auto-start programs do.
(Edit, afterthought) MS Update works that way too, come to think of it, including the restart button.
I have had a few conflict issues. Anyone know if they still conflict? I was using the key Rubber Duck gave everyone right up until I had to reinstall MBAM 2.0. So no Resident protection…
I’ve not had any conflicts from the first alpha through to the current version now, I did do a clean install of MBAM with every new release.
An explorer search for Malwarebytes will remove all folders and repeat the same in regedit will clean everything nicely, there is the mbam clean tool also that can be used but the method I first mentioned is more thorough ( do both for safe measure )
Charyb, from the comments in that link, I get the feeling that at least at this point, before that next program upgrade, MBAM 2.0 is in that same controversial / not quite ready for prime time state that avast 2014 was when it first came out.
I hadn’t even noticed … I barely realized last night that MBAM 1.75 also doesn’t have the File Assassin. I guess the times that I’ve used File Assassin, it was obviously from earlier versions of MBAM.
I have only had a couple problems. First one is the General Settings button doesn’t work correctly and the second one is the program starting at weird times. I have it set not to start but it starts at random times. I wonder if an update is triggering it?
They changed how it updates, it now no longer has its own update servvice and uses mbam.exe to autoupdate deffinitions. I take it you have the pro version but no real time protection activated either?
