This is a little off topic but there seems to be alot of knowledge in this forum so I thought I’d give it a chance.
I was running McAfee Virus Scan 6 on my computer. Last year I upgraded to version 8 Pro. Unfortunately I did not uninstall the older version first , instead let the new version do it for me. MISTAKE Everything seemed good until I noticed in my right click menu I had two Scan For Viruses options. The top one was left from the old version and gives me a error if used. The lower one works perfectly. This extra option is ONLY present if I am right clicking on a drive or a folder to scan. If it’s a file it isn’t there. I uninstalled the new version , reboot … installed the old version …reboot … uninstalled the old. The problem still there. I contacted McAfee…What a waste of time. I did receive manual instructions to remove the program … but no help…I eventually installed the new version and just learned to deal with it.
I figure there must be a key somewhere that I could delete to get rid of the extra option but I can’t seem to find it.
I was curious if anyone might have an idea how to get rid of this option in my right click menu. I don’t think there is a program that can do it. I tried to manually put in a path to open mcafee but nothing works. I just want to get rid of it before I get rid of McAfee all together and install Avast.
Well, I see you edited your 12:10 post about not wanting to reformat for “such a small matter”. Must not be that small of a matter for you to present the problem here in the forum?
Sure, it is stored in registry - it’s just not easy to say where exactly, there may be more possibilities.
Check HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
there may be the obsolete subkey under these keys.
If you’re using XP, you might also want to check out a program called Mmm.
It’s a context menu organizer. If you can’t get rid of it, this program will let you hide it…
Read more about it HERE. MmmFree is also available from

Neal63: I had the wrong version listed in my first post so I edited them. My second post then made no sense so I edited it to answer your post because I couldn’t just delete it.
Igor: I checked out the keys but only found reference there to the newest version of McAfee. However, I did learn something, that’s cool.
Bob3160: I’ll be checking out more of the content on ExtremeTech. I downloaded and installed Mmmm. Worked like a charm. I’ll be showing that to my friends!
That was a small issue but it was really annoying until I learned to ignore that menu option.
