Hello,
I use VLC as it’s free (opensource also) and supports many formats and so far I haven’t see any down point to using it instead of Windows Media Player or RealPlayer.

VLC is a wonderful player (usually for video files though).
If you need something just for music, I’ve always used http://www.winamp.com. I’m sure there’s something better out there by now though, I’ve been using it for ages and I haven’t listened to music on my computer in quite a while now that I stream it to my house stereo with my DVD player, PS3 or Orb’s remote service for winamp.
I use Media Player Classic - Home Cinema for everything.
I prefer it over VLC, Windows Media Player 11, and Real Player. Try it out and see for yourself.
I’ve had problems where VLC disables my screen saver and power settings and doesn’t re-enable them when I close it. Media Player Classic Home Cinema also loads much quicker for me. If you have a very fast computer, you may not notice a difference.
Does this help? Five Best Desktop Media Players

I like the free version of Zoom player
My favorite has always been JetAudio and the not so basic Basic version is free.

I don’t know what I have been doing wrong then, because I have never been able to get VLC to work properly on any of the three or so times I have tried it in the hope it might work.
So for me VLC is a non-starter, literally ;D
I like the VLC interface better than Media Player, but for some reasons it’s got issues (both video and sound) that Media Player Home Cinema doesn’t. So I’ll give my preference to Media Player in Windows. Gotta mention even if unneeded for the users here that VLC runs fantastic in Linux, best player there
Thanks so much for all the information on media players.
Any more thoughts will also be appreciated.
see here too, I don’t use it but that’s interesting:

jetAudio has already been suggest. Maybe more suggestions will bring it to the head of the line. ;D
I like Media Player Classic & Winamp.
I prefer Media Player Classic, but it won’t work on my Vista 64bit, neither 64bit or 32bit versions. Media Player Classic works great on XP.
I use Winamp on Vista 64bit. Winamps bookmarks work better than Media Player Classic’s. DVDs won’t play in Winamp.
I also like jetAudio, but I can’t figure out how bookmarks work in it.
VLC has blurry streaming video. :
Thanks for all the great suggestion.
If others want to comment, I will appreciate all advise.
