You seem to be messing two applications: avast Virus Cleaner, a standalone application just to ‘clean’ an infection, and avast antivirus, the main program.

avast antivirus has residents (programs that stay in memory) and monitors your system. ‘Inside’ of it will be the feature of cleaning (the ‘Virus Cleaner’).

If a virus is not on memory you could run avast scanning to find the infected file, for instance. You don’t need to go to DOS if you have Windows XP/2k because you could run the ‘boot time’ scanning of avast :wink:
