Memory Locked causing system hang

Hi All,

Can someone help me? OS is Win XP Pro SP1, with Avast Home 4.7.1001 installed. Great product, but it hang my system so often I start to get frustrated.

It seems like it locked up the memory or so, causing it freezed everything but the active windows that is opening ( say like now, I am using Firefox to type message to this forum. I still can use it, but I can’t open any other programs )

Many thanks!

Check the Task Manager and see what is using the most CPU % and tell us ?

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

What are the sensitivity settings for the Standard Shield and the Web Shield ?
What is your processor (CPU) and how much RAM have you got ?

Previous AV1 : Norton Interner Security 2005
Action : Uninstalled through Add & Remove Programme

Previous AV2 : Norton Antivirus 2007 Vista
Action : Uninstalled through Add & Remove Programme

PC Info : AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 512MB RAM
OS Info : Win XP SP1

I just ran Registry Cleaner

I hope the registry cleaner rooted out any remnants of Norton as it is a right royal pain in the rear to get rid of at times and the remnants, legacy registry entries for virtual drives, etc. which can cause conflict.

Has the clearing of the registry resolved the problem, if not it may be worth look at the SymNRT info below.

A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

Done with SymNRT
When I first ran Registry Cleaner, it did clean up some Norton Registry files
So SymNRT ran without smoothly
Will see if this resolve the memory lock up problem
If not, guess I have to turn to other AV
Anyway, many thanks, DavidR.

our welcome.

Well… at least you could as for further help here if you need…
