C:\Windows\SysWOW64\mfc45.dll|>1 - Error: Archive is password protected

Can someone tell me what’s up with this file? I haven’t seen it before as such detection and i’ve seen the same thing with Comodo, Kaspersky and some other. They all detected this mfc45.dll as password protected or corrupted file. Any idea what might have brought it to my system? Anyone else getting the same thing?

Win7 SP1 x64 fully updated

Basically, it means that there’s a small block of data inside of the file which resembles an archive header - so the AV detects the file as a (self-extracting) archive. Since it’s probably only the header, not followed by what a real archive would contain, the “corrupted” error appears.
I don’t have that file on my system, so I can’t say more.

It’s interesting because i would notice the file for sure before, but i just did not long ago. And both Comodo and Kaspersky are also detecting it like this. I mean it would be a bit strange for MS to release such file wouldn’t it be?

I’ve attached it if you can make any use of it… (just remove the fake .txt extension and you’ll get teh DLL)

Attach a binary file here by renaming it to .txt doesn’t really work - the file gets corrupted by the text transfer, so it’s not valid.

There really is a (tiny - less than 400 bytes) password-protected ZIP archive appended to the file. Also, while the name kinda suggests Microsoft origin, it definitely doesn’t come from Microsoft - it’s written in Delphi.
Apart from that, I don’t see any suspicious strings inside…

Sorry it took so long. Here is the nonthrashed version directly from my system:

I hope you get get any more details out of it now. Thx

The file is corrupted… I mean, it’s not the transfer this time, it’s simply truncated; it should be about 700KB in size.
I’d say you can safely delete it, Windows wouldn’t be able to load that file anyway if it’s got just 70KB on your disk.

I did the sfc check and everything was fine. So i just deleted it as you suggested. I have no clue where it came from.

Hey there,

Sorry for resurrecting a dead thread, but we, iolo technologies and creators of System Mechanic, wanted to provide some insight for you and any future users who stumble upon this thread.

We’d like to let you know that the MFC45 file is not corrupt or harmful in anyway. How do we know? We created it! The file itself was created as a way to provide security for our users and their product licenses as a result of the rising cracks and hacks for System Mechanic.

We are aware that this file has sometimes been mistakenly detected by certain antivirus programs and we’ve addressed this issue in the latest update this week.

Lastly, we are also working on a solution that does not require this file. We plan to have this fix addressed in a future product update. We hope this information helps, thank you!
