Microsoft Exchange BPA Warning

Hello - I am receiving the following warning after running the MEBPA:

Link state not registered
SMTP instance ‘Default SMTP Virtual Server’ on server SERVER does not support the ‘X-LINK2STATE’ verb. This will cause routing updates to be frozen.

The link regarding fixing this issue is http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997424.aspx

It states 2 causes:

  1. First, some administrators may have disabled xlsasink.dll as a way to work around the intelligent routing functionality it provides. This is not a recommended best practice and will likely lead to performance and reliability problems. In this case, it is recommended that you reinstall Exchange on the affected computer to install and register xlsasink.dll. - I have not disabled this

  2. Secondly, this warning may be returned if you are running an antivirus product that installs and uses its own SMTP protocol stack to scan messages. In this case, the antivirus software may run its own SMTP stack that intercepts and scans messages before they reach the Exchange SMTP stack. In this case, the antivirus SMTP stack is not using X-LINK2STATE verb. It is recommended that you run the antivirus software in a mode that does not require it to install its own SMTP stack on the Exchange server.

Is avast the cause of this warning? We have been experiencing routing issues with our email and I am trying to get to the bottom of it. And, if so, is there a fix?

Cheers,
R1Andy

Ahh, I just read the info on the second error MEBPA is reporting, and it too says that antivirus may be causing this issue:

‘XEXCH50’ is not registered
SMTP instance ‘Default SMTP Virtual Server’ on server SERVER does not support the ‘XEXCH50’ verb. This may cause public folder replication problems.

The Exchange Server Analyzer may return this warning if you are running an antivirus product that installs and uses its own SMTP protocol stack to scan messages. In this case, the antivirus software uses its own SMTP stack to intercept and scan messages before they reach the Exchange SMTP stack. In this case, the SMTP stack in the antivirus software is not using the XEXCH50 verb.

It is recommended that you run the antivirus software in a mode that does not require it to install its own SMTP stack on the Exchange server or run such software at the incoming perimeter of your SMTP network. If you have disabled the SMTP stack for the antivirus software, and you still get this warning, reinstall Exchange to install and register peexch50.dll properly.

Any help is greatly appreciated
