I recently uninstalled my AVAST. Unquestionablely it was causing my MS Outlook to crash. It was very frustrating to have to start, restart the application just to receive and send email reliably.
I’m sure there is a switch or something i could have done to have prevented this situatuation?
In any event…it was enough for me to UNINSTALL Avast and go back to AVG. Upon doing this, I’ve been trouble free.
BOOTING did not resolve this issue for me. I’m running a business and I missed several important emails waiting for them to come in. It took me awhile to realize my Outook needed to be restarted. I had to Control-Alt-Delete and stop Outlook and restart it. Sometimes this worked and sometimes it didnt. Other times I had to repair my internet connection.
This is a really frustrating bug. I’m still not sure if its my fault on the settings or not…I didn’t care and chose to go with AVG where I’m clear sailing.
I am little puzzled that having made the, apparently satisfactory, switch to AVG you are continuing to participate here. Perhaps it is the much friendlier forum that keeps you coming back.
Since you are here - I did try to reproduce the problem without success (albeit with Outlook 2003 and Windows XP) - but I would like to confirm that you were using the Outlook/Exchange provider for avast along with Outlook 2007. Can you confirm that please?
If so, can you recall if you also tried turning off in the Outlook/Exchange provider the automatic scan of archived emails?
I’m trying to tell you that I was really unhappy and greatly inconvenienced to have my Outllook suddenly cut out on me on repeated conditions. To me this was no small, or casual manner. I lost time and serious $$$ doing this. When I realized the culprit was Avast…I was well Aghast!
Perhaps I’ve done something with my settings. I’m running Outlook 2000. Windows XP SP2. Intel Quad Core 2.
From my own experience I know the importance of this running smoothly in a business (in a major international enterprise). Since, as a business, you must be using avast Professional edition I would, in your place, be rather more demanding of avast or - at least - demanding a refund of my avast license. Of course, if you are using the avast Home edition to support a business … the rest can go unsaid …
I have just tested on a system on which I have Windows XP Pro SP3 along with Outlook 2000 and avast 4.8.1201.
Running with the avast Outlook/Exchange provider I am able to receive and send email without difficulty in Outlook 2000. I am not suggesting that because it works for me that you do not have a problem just that there is some condition that differs in our environments. It will take someone who has such a difference and about whom avast might care more (due to a paid license) to work with them to isolate the problem.
If you can would you confirm that you were using the Outlook/Exchange provider for avast along with Outlook 2000?
If so, can you recall if you also tried turning off in the Outlook/Exchange provider the automatic scan of archived emails?
I’ve just downloaded Avast (about 3 hours ago) and I’m so frustrated!! I can’t find any help with not being able to receive and send emails. I’m using Outlook Express 6 with XP Service Pack 2. I’m not a techy-type person and I find the FAQs page online too confusing. I thought I spoke English, but perhaps I’m mistaken. Is there anyone out there who can explain in simple English how to get my Outlook up and running again. I’ve tried rebooting, no joy.
I will add that for the last 11 years I’ve been using Norton (currently Norton Internet Security 2008) but so many people have been extolling the virtues of Avast, I thought it time I changed. I’m sorry now. Fortunately I haven’t yet completely discarded Norton, just disabled all the various components.
Unfortunately you have posted in an MS Outlook (not express) thread that is unrelated to your problem. You should have created an new topic of your own or used the forum search.
You need to uninstall Norton (and possibly even more) Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.
This may be the cause of your problem, so You should create a new topic so we can help without confusing this topic. At the top of the page with a list of topics, where you found this one there is a New Topic button, use that to create your own topic and we can get started.
Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.
Also, Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
