AV-Comparatives.org, said it would formally test Security Essentials in August, and release its results the next month. (Sept.)

Well i prefert my nice major kit and its Avast! + MBAM. I love them both and why leave them ? Microsoft missed a lot exploit to my eyes and i think exploit and script is like a major virus now a day. Like i heard in news their like 300 000 websites that is hacked and more… So i think Avast! is accurate on this way.

July 4, 2009 | Symantec: it’s dangerous to rely on free antivirus
By John Pospisil

A top Symantec executive has hit out at free antivirus software, including Microsoft’s Microsoft Security Essentials, warning consumers that it won’t be enough to keep them safe.

Speaking to BLORGE, David Hall, Symantec’s Product Manager Asia-Pacific Consumer Products and Solutions said that free antivirus software isn’t able to keep up with full-price suites like those offered by Symantec.

Probably not the best thread to post this message, but still, does fit in with the content so far.
I will post the main points, then return the MSE focus to a previous thread, where I had been posting most of my content on MSE.

The following applies specifically to XP (and possibly to other Windows OS - Vista and Windows 7).

Microsoft seems happy to categorise MSE as antimalware. Perhaps they do this so as not to intrude too far on the usage of patrons who already have long-standing relationships with third party technologies. On the other hand, perhaps they intend to introduce a new category of software that covers the detection and removal of all malware types.

The relevant registry entries are found in –
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\

The location of MSE on C:\ drive is –
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\

Event log is found in –
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\Support

I have only briefly looked through the log. It is long , and as yet I do not know what is represented.

Also in XP. MSE appears to have a bug. The problem concerns auto updates which are intermittent, may be hit and miss, and do not seem to click in automatically with the new boot.

Some of these issues were thrashed out in the first few days of Beta launch of MSE. I guess because the problems were not resolved, the likelihood is that there is a bug.

The reports from my trial use of MSE will be posted in the following thread –
