Microsoft Security Essentials...ETC.

Running a new Windows 7 system with Avast Internet Security; today got a kim kommando email advertising new version of Avast. When I went to check if Avast had been automatically updated, I realized that Avast was not running and, indeed, the program file seemed to have disappeared from my system.

I had installed Avast Internet Security on this new system in January 2013 with no problem or error message.

Today, I downloaded the new version 8 Avast and installed but got the message “We have detected a previous anti-virus is still installed on your PC…”

  1. Any idea how Avast was “disappeared” from my system ?? It was not in the list of programs to uninstall in the control panel, or the taskbar; the folder was still there in Program Files but, the folders were empty and I could not find the Avast program file. I did NOT “accidently” uninstall.

  2. I have been reading about uninstalling MSE (It is running). Can I uninstall it without uninstalling Avast 8 first?

  3. Which method should I use to uninstall MSE (Windows 7). Is it effective to uninstall from the control panel?

Thanks,
kristin

You really should uninstall MSE (from control panel no problem) then reinstall Avast IS.

AVAST “detected a RPC error” After update to Avast 8, many problems due to MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS… I went into the settings and just switched it off, I didn’t uninstall it. I don’t know when it was installed, wasn’t there in the beginning.

AFTER 5 HOURS, I FIXED MY AVAST 8, it works great. Here’s what I did.

After 5 hours of cleaning, removing programs and many re-installs, I found that
“Microsoft Security Essentials” had been trying to install their virus protection since my Avast was no longer working. It actually succeeded once is the reason I found out what was going on. I disabled the program.
I had just uninstalled IOBIT Advanced System Care (the whole malware, protection and cleaning sub-programs), then I tried an Avast 8 install, which went perfect, works perfect and after 8 hrs. of use, it’s still PERFECT.

CONCLUSION; for my XP-sp3 computer, It was either -“IOBIT Advanced System Care”- or “Microsoft Security Essentials” or the way the were installed that was causing the conflict and my problems with AVAST 8.
All three companies and their products are excellent and no blame on any. Maybe my installations were flawed. JUST HAPPY TO HAVE AVAST WORKING.

So…

I uninstalled Avast IS first, then uninstalled MSE. Then rebooted computer. After rebooting…the oddest thing…my Wacom Intuos4 (usb) was unresponsive. Although I am not exactly “keyboard literate,” I managed to “key around” and re-install Avast IS.

Immediately after the installation finished, Poof…Wacom functionality was back!!!

I am not complaining. The Avast error message re: previous installation did not come up. However, I am baffled about this Wacom functionality issue.

Thanks for your help and, if anyone has ideas about what went on with Wacom…or had a similar situation…I would appreciate hearing.

kristin

Do you have the latest drivers for wacom? Wacom functionality problems were also being reported from within the Adobe Community,

polonus

As a long time Adobe user, I do keep my Wacom drivers updated…

So strange that it happened after the security uninstalls and functionality returned when Avast was re-installed. Immediately.
