Wow what a surprise! Well we all knew MS has some crazy ideas and this is one of em! ::slight_smile:

Both that and also announcing the next version of windows I thing in only two years. One that isn’t backward compatible, I think it is in one of the vista topics in the forum.

If true, that would be a winner. It would seriously make me look at Windows again. Backward compatibility has been their Achilles heel. Without it, I think they could put out a dynamite product.

Would I pay good money just to have the latest Windows OS for 5 years?..
I have a dual-boot XP Pro / 950SR2 Athlon 3200+ PC and I still regularly use 95 (it’s just so wonderfully fast!), though I expect the day may come when some app stops working properly, so it’s hard to know right now whether end of support for Vista will be a serious problem. Maybe it will actually be glitch-free by then.

I can’t recall what topic we were discussing this, as one of the reasons given for a new OS release in such a short time was because it didn’t need to factor in all the backward compatibility issues. My comment was one of surely starting from scratch would take longer.

Perhaps that is why they are extending support for XP ;D

That’s very odd, Why suppot an older product longer than your newest one? The only reason I can think of is they’re not expecting Vista to sell that well.

Well if the new Windows Vienna or whatever its called breaks backwards compatibility and you have to pay to upgrade or buy new software hopefully people will look at Linux and OS X as alternatives

Like I’ve said several times lately, I’d be very interested in a new Microsoft OS if it wasn’t backward compatible. With their expertise, I would expect it to be sleek, fast and very competent. But, I would always dual boot it, with Linux as the lead operating system. Same as you with OS X I would expect. And you’re right, Linux and Apple would benefit greatly.
