Microsoft Toolbar - false positive?

Yesterday my computer stopped unexpectedly (not when I was using it).

When I restarted it I was about to leave in a hurry, and backed up the C: drive leaving the backup software running while I was out.

When I returned the backup had been done, and I tried to start the Microsoft Toolbar to do some normal work.

Avast reported that it was infected and moved it to the vault.

The Microsoft toolbar came on a CD with Microsoft Office 97, and I have been using it every day for the last 10 years or more. It displays the desktop icons in a row on the top of side of the screen and enables one to start and run another program while one is running in full-screen mode.

Why would it suddenly become infected?

I ran a full scan, and another program was reported as a threat.

Is there a way to check to see if these are really threats, or if they are false positives? How does one get them out of the vault?

Has anyone else had Microsoft Toolbar reported as a threat?

File(s) can be uploaded (max 20mb) to www.virustotal.com and scanned with 43 scanners to see if more detect it

always run update before you scan so you have the latest database
click on the remove selected button to quarantine anything found
if anything is found you may post the scan log here

So do I get the program out of the vault and back where it belongs?

right click the file in chest and scan again, when it shows clean (will happen when you get the new update) then you can click restore
