Mirror and network Caching

::slight_smile:

I thought i would type this for all the poor sods out there who get stuck with unfortunate mirror issues, now before anyone knocks ADM i want to add that i have used plenty corporate style AV’s and nothing comes close to AVAST! so just get past the mirror and all will be well.

now for the nitty gritty, if you find that your mirror continuously downloads to no avail saying things like ‘package is broken’ or continues to try and download server.def from a million mirrors, you will most likely find that you are a victim of ISP caching. Yes they try and make your life better in certain countries by caching certain files for quick delivery but this can, as in this case, prove to be a very big problem for you when the signatures need to be 100%.

A work around…

as a subnote, Networks affected in South Africa so far that i have found…

  1. MWEB

Try creating, if you’re lucky enough, a VPN to a different ISP or company network and then manually run mirror.exe directly from the install dir.

Try and use an alternate method like 3G to download the mirror.

a new method which i can confirm works as well is to look for a proxy server on a differnet ISP network and then download the cache.

Call your ISP and tell them they suck.

The work around has saved me many hours, truthfully though I have not yet called my ISP to tell them the details which would make me very happy but the problem is, is that they probably won’t understand anyway.

Thank you bensym,

I had actually received a message from mweb stating that they had resolved aforementioned issue however it seems not! I am currently re running setup from an axxess connection to see what happens.

edit

This was exactly the case! Thank you for this most helpful post!

My pleasure …Tarnalcock,

i also got stuck very badly on this one hence the post, Darn caching :cry:
