Missing Avast Icons

:'(??? CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! I am pretty much a novice when it comes to technical stuff (1 dumb blonde! :-[) - my Icons have disappeared from my system tray. I have just looked through items on the forum and all I can find is pretty technical - I really have no idea what it is talking about! (that dumb blonde again! :-[) I found a way to get them back yesterday by going into the settings (I think) but when I log back on they just disappeared again, can anyone please help ??? :-*

What operating system do you use? (As in windows xp, 2000, vista etc.)
Does the taskbar remain at the bottom of the screen, or disappear too?
When the icons disappear, do they just “go”, leaving a tabbed gap, or does the computer start like this? And when the icons disappear, do they all go, or are some left behind?

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings. Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder.

Hi - Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post of yesterday. I have tried your recommendation but sadly it only adds another icon to my desktop and not to system tray. The missing icons are from my system tray - the ones which keep me informed that they are actually working and generator. Without these I don’t know if AVAST is still updating or not. I do have Adaware on my system (which is running XP) but dont think I have anything else except firewall.

Ad-watch could be blocking the avast installation.
Can you disable it (into ad-aware), uninstall avast, boot, install avast again and only after that enable Ad-watch again?

 1. The first suggestion is a work around creating a desktop shortcut (as I said) until the problem was resolved.

There was also the option of creating a shortcut in the Startup folder, if you had no additional software that may have an effect. C:\Documents and SettingsUserName\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder.

Did you check this ?

Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings.
 1. AdAware, isn’t a problem unless you are running AdWatch as indicated in the (AdWatch) part of the post. If you are using the free version of adaware it doesn’t come with adwatch.

;D Thanks again - I finally tok the easy way out - I uninstalled and re-installed (after re-boot of course ::)) Everything back where it should be so fingers crossed - Many thanks for your help good luck for the future.
